First Show/Pull

Well I am hoping to get the M put back together this weekend and next weekend I am hopeing to go to my first show! Its the National Edge T&A tractor and engine show. First time to ever come to kansas. He is expecting 200-300 tractors and quite a few rare ones at that. So is this gonna be kinda competive or should I be that woried that my tractor isn't as well restored as others? And he said there will be farm stock and super stock pulls. I guess im in the farm stock? I think the ole M will pull hard if I get in the pull. Do I need willy bars or something or what is the hitch hight and other rules that are comon? Im getting way to excited but I think I'll have alot of fun!

Derek - First off don't be a bit concerned about what your tractor looks like! My experience is show goers frequently prefer the less perfectly restored tractors (also the totally UNrestored tractors) over the shiniest "trailer queens".

As for the tractor pull check the rules. For the several I do here in western NY the "antique farm stock" class is exactly that. Tractors must be in essentially daily working trim. Wheelie bars, breakaway kill switches, etc are not required.

A few other rule highlights as I recall them:

-Aux hang-on weight brackets are not allowed
-Stock carbs and air cleaners must be used
-Wide open RPM cannot exceed the max rated RPM stamped on the tractor nameplate by more 10%.
-Tires must be stock or a maximum of 1 size oversized. Tires cannot cut. Plain worn tires however are OK.
-Straight pipe exhaust is OK (most everyone uses a muffler however...)
-Drawbar must be stock and at a minimum specified height from the ground (18" maybe?)

Bottom line is you pull it Friday night the same as you you would have farmed with it Friday afternoon.

I live in Pratt Kansas and this show is in Hutchinson Kansas at the state fair grounds, only 55 miles away, also they are having a swap meet.

Most shows I have been to aren't competitive, but I haven't been to one for a few years, things may be changing as I saw a post one day of a tractor with a trophy. I have to say I used to go to a lot of car shows with my 1970 442 convert and worrying about what bolt is correct and which chalk mark is the right shade really takes the fun out of it. My car is mostly original and nice, but competing with the millionaire bunch that started showing up really ruined it. Case in point " the Barret Jackson Auction". I like to just bring some toys to share and have fun, not sit around and look at things the boys with bottomless bank accounts bring in to impress the other boys with bottomless bank accounts! For the most part, you can't even talk to those guys unless you are in the click But that is mostly at the car shows. I would say go and have fun, If you have a dent in the hood, tell the story of how it got there! There was a little tractor show here in town at a small festival and they gave out a cash award. I took my F-12 fresh from hauling logs in the woods with leaves stuck in the front end and dirt everywhere. I ended up winning ($10) because the guys said they liked it because I used it. a guy had a nice restored cub there and I think he was a little upset, but thats what judging usually does. I wish I could go to that show in Kansas. I have engines too. IH M 1.5 hp and 3hp and a couple Olds 3hp and 4.5 hp hit and miss. and all of them have the original rust and grease.

I live 55 miles north of Topeka, about 4 hours from Hutchison and 5 from Pratt. If it wasn't so far I would go to the show but with the price of gas I won't be driving that far. Thanks Dave

I woulkd respect any old tractor at any show. Even if it was hobcobbled and rigged up. These old tractors should be treasured in any condition. From working to restored, to lawn ornamants, I like them all.

Sure there will be people who will turn their noses up at your tractor, it takes all kinds, you probably dont want to associate with them anyways. I'm sureyou'll meet some good folks that appreciate old iron in any condition.
