Tom; contaminants on the surface you are painting can cause fish eyes. Before painting be sure to wipe it all down with a good wax/degreaser made for painting. You can get an additive for your paint to reduce fish eyes, but proper cleaning and handling will probably cure the problem. Use latex or nitrile gloves when handling, the oil from your hands can mess up the paint. If you want to pick up any dust use a tack cloth, then paint. Hope this helps you.

Keep it clean, as Glen says, and you don't need fisheye remover. Some people swear by it, others say it causes more problems than it solves. It is needed most by those who work in places where there are other people using silicone or other oil-type products; in other words the air is contaminated. In a home shop, there is no need for it. Just use wax and grease remover immediately before painting.

About the fisheye problem, I won't purchase or have anything on the place with silicone in it, like wax or silicone enhanced sprays because of the some day potetial problems when painting.

Although, silicone residues from silica sand blasting might be just as big of problem!

If I understand it correctly, fish eye control additve is silicone oil, so the silicone is all through the paint insted of just random spots on the surface.

As an addendum to the fish-eye problem, The automotive polishes with silicone in them, give a great shine, but if you don't carefully "wash" everything with automotive paint wax & grease remover, you will have fisheyes.
"Armor-all" is nasty stuff, and tough to remove from anything it gets on!
Also, if you have neighbors "upwind" from you, and if they spend a lot of time waxing their cars, you will probably have problems with fisheyes! With that in mind, all you fellers who "down" fisheye eliminator, namely Fee, or the trade name of "Smoothie", and say you will NEVER use that stuff---have fun, washing off the nice first coat of $100 a gallon paint, to get rid of fisheyes!
