Fixing Cordless Drill Batterys

Didnt someone post on here a while back that there is a way to fix cordless drill batteries? My 19.2 craftsman just died...

Sent 2 to battery Dr. a year ago, one came back fine, but the other one he couldn't seem to get the spot weld to hold. So,after the second try I went berserk on the phone and he refunded my money,(to my surprise) His website has since disappeared! I have been looking for a inexpensive source of ni-cad batteries for a while and haven't found any. It's kind of frustrating to throw away cordless vacuums and other tools only because you can buy a new one for the same price as new batteries!

I've had a couple rebuilt by the local interstate battery store. They have performed better than the originals did when they were new.

I have bought NiCd cells on e-bay and rebuilt my own. It's a lot of work to arrange them to fit in the case and solder them all together, but they work better than the original because I used higher capacity cells. If you have the time, it's one way to go.

I just wanted to let ya all know it"s not that bad to rebuild them. I have an old 12v skil top gun drill and 3 inch saw, that came with diamond blade for tile,that was like my third hand. I bot the 3500 mah NIMH cells off ebay. Ya have to line them up careful,solder + to -, and stuff them back in the pack. I epoxied the top back on and it seems to hold ok. Charges with the old charger and shuts off fine. The cost was 52 bucks for 20 sub c cells for two packs. BIG IMPROVMENT in performance. I ordered 24, 3800 mah cells for the dewalt 14.4 stuff, and they were $70 . They sent 4500 mah. They shut off charging at over 16v, and last like they are on steroids. If they hold up as well as the original I will be happy. Just FYI,,,,Dan

Batteries Plus stores will make up the battery pack for cordless vacums while you wait. Had 2 done recently $12.95 & $14.95.

I rebuilt 2 of my Milwaukee 18v with the ebay batteries, ~1.5 yrs ago. Kind of delicate precision work to solder back the leads on the beatteries so they hold together nice and tight to fit back in the case. They are still working fine, dont last as long as the original did, but good enough. Would i do it again, prolly not, would buy the complete battery off ebay for a few bucks more.

The key to battery packs is to have ALL the batt performing EXACTLY the same, same charging rate, same discharge rate, same high voltage, same low voltage.... thats why OEM packs cost a little more, they select the batteries to be same spec.
