flex corn vs fixed

Kind of curious on what your opinions are as I am gonna order seed next week. I posted on "using your tractor" and got some questions answered, but I thought I'd ask here. On drier, but fertile soils which is a better gamble fixed or flex?

General, rule:If you preplant your N---fixed. If you sidedress----flex.

I think flex for all occasions since you can't conntrol the rain. Then you want a high enough plant population that the ears tip back a little, so you know you got all you could from the nutrients.

If you know how much rain will be received and can adjust seed population to match, then go fixed. Otherwise scale back from the maximum population you would plant if conditions were ideal, and use a flex. Can help save the crop if you have little rain and will nearly match high population fixed ear yields if weather conditions are favorable. I nearly always plant at least a semi-flex ear.

That"s one thing I learned from this year"s drouth- no more 32000, go under 30 and let the flex hybrids do what they do.
