flywheel weight

Looking for some help. I am looking at buying the steel flywheel for my tractor, but one company sells one that is a bit heavier than the stock one, and another sells one that is quite a bit lighter. Would you go with the heavy or light flywheel and why? Thanks for any help that you can provide.

are you turning a lot of rpms? if so get the lighter one, it will take less hp to turn. the heavier one will help with torque, but would kill your high rpm power if you're turning more than 20-30% over.

couldn"t have said it better, played with different flywheels over the years on my pulling truck, i would go lighter as long as its strong and going to hold together

If you are running open rpm, and pulling a drop-pan-sled. Go with a heavy one. But if pulling mph classes with a gradual sled, I would want a light one. 20 lb. on the front could be the difference, between 1st and 2nd.

I am running 3000 rpms max, but more than likely will be normally around 2500 in the speed limit classes. I pull a transfer sled without a drop pan, unless I take a trip, and then I may see a drop pan sled. Thanks for the help guys.

Years ago my buddy Kenny and I had basically identical engines except for the flywheels. I had mine cut down and lightened up to make a lighter weight class. When we would pull together in the heavier classes, his 150 lbs. heavier flywheel would beat me almost every time. These were 20% over RPM engines. If you were going open RPM I would buy the lightest one, if you are running limited RPM, then I would go as heavy as possible. Just my two cents of real experience. Later Jeff
