Sure appreciate you taking the time to try to educate a dummy!!! Thanks. When things slow down at my shop, I will get the 60 back in and disassemble the pto and clutch, then maybe I will understand how it works and possibly replace any worn parts. Again, thanks to all who contributed.
 
Dr. Bert, I have had my 60 since 1971, haven't used the PTO much, BUT, never had a problem with it. Hope it works out for ya. b

It's one long stack o stuff in there pretty much with the brake plate in the middle of the stack. Actually that brake plate is way closer to one end but the point is the brake plate is between the "let's go" parts & the "gotta stop" parts if that makes sense!

With the PTO not engaged, the cam is on one end and is shoved against the back (rear) side of the brake plate by a set of springs. Some units had 7 springs, others 9 as I recall. The clutch pack is on the other side (forward) of the brake plate. Between these two main sections and working through the center hole of the brake plate is the mechanism that engages the clutch pack and releases the brake. It does this by first pushing against the cam to squeeze all the slack forward from between the clutch plates. Once there is no more slack between the clutch plates, it still shoves some more until the cam is pushed away from the back side of brake plate letting the clutch drive the PTO! Those 7 or 9 springs that applied the brake are now the springs squeezing the clutch pack to keep the PTO going.

You can hear this action taking place on one that is properly functioning by throttling down to slow idle & very slowly engaging the PTO with no implement attached. While watching the PTO, slowly pull the handle up and you'll hear the engine begin to be pulled down by a load. The clutch is now fighting the brake but the brake is winning and the PTO is not rolling. Usually the governor will step up the throttle setting to maintain speed. As you keep lifting all of a sudden that load will go away & the PTO will begin to roll. That's when the engagement mechanism has squeezed the clutch pack enough and is pushing the cam away from the rear face of the brake plate enough that the clutch is now winning the war and the brake is slipping! As you continue to lift the handle until it snaps into the fully engaged position, you're just increasing the distance between the cam and brake plate to that magic .090 and squeezing those springs down a bit shorter to apply even more pressure to the clutch pack so it hopefully won't slip!

Bob: This is the first time I have used the PTO since removing the old Farmhand loader in '97. The Bearcat plugged up and the 60 just kept chugging along so I think the clutch was damaged before I could get to the tractor to shut things down.
