Ford 2000/4000 model decoding

I just purchased an "industrial 4000" or so the decals suggest, but the model number is 21201. I know enough that the first "2" means this is a model 2000 and the "1" is industrial. It is a gas, with 4spd and power steering. Someone did a spray can repaint at one time long ago, the hood and block are all blue, the rest grey.

Where can I find a "decoding" table for the pre-65 2000/4000 tractors? I would like to educate myself further. I did search previous posts for this topic and found some information, but not all that I'm looking for. A google search took me to "myfordtractors", but that site wants you to do a "download" to view the pertinent table. (I think I'll pass on the potential malware.) Other sites show the 1965 and later tractors.

I'm not new to Ford ownership, I have an 871 diesel that I've owned for 36 years. I also recently purchased an 861, but it needs sheet metal, wheels, and tires along with other items. It's just a "parts" tractor at this point.

Thanks all.

Here is an explanation of model numbers - https://www.n tractor club.com/howtos/pdfs/Quick-ID-Ford-Tractors.pdf (remove the spaces in 'n tractor club' and paste, I don't think links to there are allowed here).

Is there a serial number stamped under the model number? The tractor in the picture is consistent with an agricultural model. As is the model number for a 1963 or later tractor. An industrial tractor would have had a heavier, non-adjustable front axle. The sheet metal mounted lower and the rear axle are consistent with a 2000 model. The cut-out in the lower front grill suggests a previous life with a front mounted hydraulic pump and loader. The power steering is a good feature.

Looks like it's been beat on pretty hard, hope you can provide a happy home.

If nobody provides a suitable online reference for model number decoding there is a good one in the I&T FO-20 third party condensed service manual on page 2. The manual can be purchased from this site, at some tractor supply stores, or used on Ebay and I'm sure Amazon. It shows:

21201:

2 134 gas or 144 diesel engine
1 Agricultural or Industrial models 1963 or later
20 Four wheel All-Purpose with adjustable front axle (AKA agricultural)
1 Four-speed transmission with PTO

So model number matches the picture and it is not an Industrial. The serial number should indicate 1963 or 1964.

Thank you so much for the information. I suspected this tractor was really a 2000 with incorrect decals or sheet metal. Now I know what I have for certain and how to decode in the future.

S/N number looks like 21552.

The wiring is a mess from whomever converted it to an alternator. I couldn't crank it with the starter switch on the trans housing; I started it using a remote starter switch across the solenoid. Runs decent, no smoke or noises, but the "generator" lamp stays lit all the time. I also found that the power to the coil is passing thru a slip-on terminal at the start solenoid, that kept falling off (tractor then died). I think that might explain why it was in the "as-is" junk row at the auction, nobody could keep it running to drive it across the auction block.

I just brought it home yesterday, haven't messed with it much, other than to get it running to drive off the trailer. The fuel sediment bowl is pretty milky (gas has water in it for sure) and the gas doesn't smell all that fresh. I did try switching gears, I found reverse, forth, first, and I think third. I've not driven any Fords with a 4spd, not sure how close the gear spacing is. The casting was hard to read, but I think it's R, 4, 1 across the top and 2, 3 on the bottom.

I recently retired from aircraft maintenance, doing "avionics" installation and troubleshooting (in plain English, I was an electrician on corporate jet planes) I bought this a project, but eventually, I'll make it a useful citizen.

Again, appreciate the help!

The link you provided was perfect! I found what I needed (and more). Thank you.

I do have the one Ford (the 871) it was my first tractor when we bought our small acreage in 1995. I've since had Allis Chalmers (WD), Farmall (B, C, H), Ford (8N) and Olivers (88, 550, 770, 1650, 1800). All those are gone now, except for the 871, 770, 1650, and the 1800. I just brought home a Farmall 230, the parts 861, and now this 2000. I have to work on the wife some to see if I can give this a happy home here. She's not a fan of any of the "strays". She doesn't think I need any additional tractors, especially if they aren't meadow green. I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about.

SN 21552 is April 1963

You have the gear pattern correct. Gear selection/spacing is not a strong point, very basic.
