Ford 268 Cid Engines

We have a 1976 Ford 7600 with what we thought was an original 256T engine. In the process of rebuilding we installed the pistons and found they came out of the block by .117.After checking block #S and cleaning the valve cover tag we found it to be a BSD 444t 268 CID engine.My question Did the early BSD replacement engines come with out the external webbing on the block.Was told by NH dealer that these never came Without the webbed block.The block # matches to the valve cover tag.

I would think so. I'm not sure what year the ribbed blocks came along, but the 268T came out in 1980 with the Blue Power Special, and those engines were NOT ribbed. I'm gonna take a guess that ribbed blocks came out in the mid to late 80's.

The dealer may be correct about BSD engines, but I know that production 268 engines did not come with ribbing in the first editions.

What is the date code stamped on the RH pan rail?

Ribbed blocks started in 1983. BSD engines (Basildon Service Diesel) were placed on the market as a power unit in 1986... so yes, ALL BSD engines will have a ribbed block. That said... not all 268T engines will have a ribbed block and obviously not all 268 cid turbo engines are '444T's.

Number on sticker on valve cover F694689. 268CID 4.4T. BSD 444T 6007A.We have owned this tractor since 1988 .this engine was in when we bought at auction.

Looks to me like you have a BSD engine built in 1983 (3B3A). Rod - Rick B, would you agree?

That's what it looks like... but it's not in tune with the written info I've read in the past.
I don't suppose it makes a whole lot of difference tho provided that the date codes are respected for parts information.

The engine in my 1987 6610 II is a 268 ribbed block.

I'd agree the date code indicates a 1983 block. I don't have a definitive opinion on when the ribbed blocks were introduced, but will look at a 7700 Blue power Special this weekend. I'm all but certain it's not ribbed and it absolutely has the original block (and head gasket).

Tractor serial # C509601 indicates that it is a 1976 model so it isn't a blue power special.I was just wanting to know what replacement engines were offered for these tractors in the early 80's.Thanks to everyone for their help.Will post pictures when tractor is all painted.

My friend's late 1980 7700 Blue Power Special does not have a ribbed block which is consistent with info others have already posted here. I checked the 3 cyl 201 D that was transplanted into my 4000 and the date code indicates a 1988 build and that block is ribbed as one would expect. I knew the engine came from a 4610, but didn't know the exact vintage.
