was wondering if the new replacemt pto power shafts for the ford 9N would have issues on the old dear born equipment like post digger. and belly mount sickle bar mower, COuLD I STILL USE the belt pully for the sickle bar mower or would i need a down size coupler, and would that cause length line up issues

If you have old implements with the 1&1/8 inch spline shafts yeah you will have issues and yes if you add an ORC to take it back down to that size from 1&3/8 you could have issues with the PTO shaft length. Might have to cut the shafts shorter on the implements.

Why not find a used 1&1/8 inch PTO shaft to replace it with? I am sure their a lot of them around.

I bet there are folks on this board that you can get a good used replacment 1 1/8" from.

why im looking for a pto shaft is the ford jumps out why running the brand new 4ft bush hog, ford dealer said only thing it could be is twisted splines on the inside of the pto shaft, he has been in the ford buissness since they was new

IM TRYING to get one for my dad for xmass, He got a new 4ft bush hog PTO keeps jumping out, he has had the ford since the 80's never run much on the pto said he tryed to do hay in the late 80's with a pto rake guy loaned him did the same thing was thinking the rake was to much for it back then

At least now you have told us what the problem is.

There is no guarantee that a new shaft will fix your problems.

I have seen pics of the coupler having the splines eat out of it.

I don't know where to find them right now, but I did try briefly.

Hi Mark

If your PTO is jumping out of engagement under load it's not the Pto Shaft itself but the PTO shifter device on the back of the transmission. Ive seen alot of bungee cord and chains on the pTO lever to keep them engaged. Alot of work to change/repair that.

Mark......you wrote......"ford dealer said only thing it could be is twisted splines on the inside of the pto shaft, he has been in the ford buissness since they was new"......no disrespect, but yer Ford dealer don't know shut from shinola.

Iff'n I understand yer complaint, yer dads PTO shifter lever pops out when connected to the PTO output shaft. There is a spring-loaded ball detent in the PTO shifter dogclutch that sometimes goes "sproing". An external rubber bungee will keep yer dads PTO shifter in gear. Simple, eh?

As fer a "twisted spline", yeah a brushhogg without an ORC (over-running coupler" can twist the splines of the PTO shaft inside the hydraulic pump chamber. And you won't know about it until you try to remove yer PTO shaft for some reason like changing leaky PTO seal or dropping yer hydraulic pump for rebuild. Then you will haffta hack-saw it out.

Iff'n yer dad is gonnna brushhog, you MUST have an ORC. And interestingly enuff, they come in different sizes specially fer yer Dads 9N which has 1-1/8 shaft. ORC's come with 1-1/8F input and 1-3/8M output. Modern brushhoggs are all 1-3/8" PTO shafts. See? you can fit without pulling yer Dads old 1-1/8 PTO shaft.

And BTW, 9N's and 5-foot brushhoggs (w/ORC) are like a marriage made in heaven. There NO REASON to use a 4-foot brushhogg. Taker-back and exchange for a 5-foot brushogg. Every-body will be happier, including yer Dad. .......Dell, the ORC safety preacher

usually NOT the shifter.. but rathr the PTO BEARING.. once it gets play, the shaft can walk out of engagement, then chewing the shaft and collar eventually. Beeping it bunjied is a good bandaid as it keeps it from walking out of engagement and geting chewed up.. though actual repair is the real answer.

i was thinking the bearing my self after i seen how it was set up , cause it runs fine till it gets binded , kind of a job not shure off till its taken apart, the ford mechanic that worked at what is now a ex ford dealer said it was most likly a bad shaft heck he's worked on them for 40 years and still works on them, he also said the shifter has a lock that can go bad , told me to point the tractor down hill and pull the shaft and see

was talking to him, back in the 80's he thinks he mest it up with a hay rake and a 5ft hog pull type brush hog, ill just try to pull the shaft and see, A bungee will not hold it pops out with your foot on it, he has never run the 4ft 3 point bush hog much has a over ride clutch on it, here a 5ft is to much for a ford 9n its big multiflora rose and real step hills seen a 3020 jd labor with a 5ft pull hog on these rose's tend to get 10ft tall , 3 point is grate cause you can hit them from the top down
