Ford 3000 Diesel engine problem

I bought this old tractor needing some work. The injection pump was bad, it had been run without oil. I put on a Lucas Simms factory reman. I did not check the timing when I removed the old pump, I did not think there was a need to. I timed the new pump to 19 degrees btdc as the service manual states and the tractor would not start, just smoke, so I think ok i'll adjust timing, I set it at 16 degrees btdc and she fired right up. Smokes a little at first but runs good, right up to around 1/2 throttle or a little more best I can tell maybe 16-1800 rpm then it starts to miss, run rough, and starts smoking and gets pretty bad at full throttle.

I've never seen an engine run great until it gets right to a certain spot in the rpm range and then from there up run like crap. Could this be a timing issue or does it sound like it has other problems?

I havn't tried it with a load. That thought did cross my mind but I don't know how it could be running out of fuel, I've had it apart from the tank to the injectors. What ever it is its common to all 3 cylinders because if I crack the lines I can tell its running about the same on all 3 and it squirts out a good amount of fuel.

sounds as if running out of fuel, another thing are you sure of full travel of the rack? are you getting a steady flow of return fuel to the tank or does it stop flowing when the tractor running poorly.

OK, about the timing, if I adjusted it to 14 degrees fuel would be entering the cylinder later in the stroke, closer to tdc, is that advancing or retarding the timing?

Seems to me like since this problem is occurring on the high end of the rpm range the timing would need to be set the other way, closer to 19 to make up for the extra speed of the piston coming up faster if that makes sense.

I'll be sure and check the return flow and see what i've got. If i'm getting a stream then that should eliminate a fuel supply issue.

It has an oil bath air cleaner, it was pretty dirty but I cleaned it out best I could. This problem just doesn't seem to be from lack of air though I don't think.

Run it without the air cleaner, but not in dirty conditions, and see. Diesel"s are pretty simple but they need air AND fuel and a clogged air cleaner will limit power and cause high peak gas temperatures. It"s not like a spark ignition engine where only full throttle operation is affected by the air cleaner restriction.

I agree with Jerry/MT. I'd also check the air path to make sure there's no birds nests or hornet's nests in the intake. I had similar problems and it was air related.

Well I took off the air cleaner pipe and it still ran the same, it smokes bad and will burn your eyes. I checked the fuel return off the injectors and it was very little to none but I am getting good fuel flow into the injection pump. If I loosen the line fuel pours out.

I think the problem is the injectors are bad. That is why I had to change the timing from 19 to 16 to get it to start. And now that its running the problems are stemming from the mis adjusted timing or the injectors are sticking.

(quoted from post at 20:14:25 02/18/11) How did you adjust from 19deg to 16 deg? with the pump housing or the gear. when I move my gear 1 tooth it changes 18 degrees on the flywheel?

Most inj pump mounting flanges are slotted to allow for timing alteration by simply loosening nuts and turning inj pump.
