Ford 3000 with Simms injection pump

Just bought a 1968 Ford 3000 with a Simms injection pump from the family of the deceased owner. The gentleman was in the process of replacing the head gasket when he passed. The tractor overheated from a clogged cooling system and blew the head gasket was what I was told. A rebuilt head, gasket kit, battery and cleaned radiator came with the tractor. The Simms pump was removed. I need advice on how to time the injection pump. From what I can see all parts look serviceable and I want to reassemble everything and put the tractor to work.

But honestly for this and other maintenance procedures you’ll do in the future you should purchase a service manual
The cheaper I&T manuals have a lot of good information
 
Thank you for your reply. I read the procedure this evening in the IT Shop Service manual that came with the tractor. The tractor is in the previous owners shop. The family is allowing me to reassemble the tractor in place to get it running. I was able to find almost all of the parts except the 3 bolts that hold the drive gear to the injection pump. I need the part numbers for those bolts and a name of a vendor that can supply them. Thank you.

Hello Daytona, welcome to YT! The bolts are New Holland PN 328-516 number 49 on the manufacturers parts page. CNHI Ford 3000 parts catalog Here is a link to a catalog from Messicks in PA, less monkeying around to get a price. Messicks Ford 3000 parts catalog You may have to select Category 02-Fuel system and then select the Simms pump diagram They show them for $3.16 each, I would think any New Holland or CaseIH dealer should be able to get them.

The pump hub bolts are 5/16 NF thread about 3/4 inch long I use on the test stand.
 
Make sure you have the triangulated plate (# 48) that goes in front of the gear, it helps the bolts clamp the gear to the pump hub

The bolts (item # 49) can be picked up at a hardware store much cheaper
 
Thanks, I’m ready to mount/time the Simms pump. Where do I find the timing marks at the front and at the flywheel. Talked to the grandson of the previous owner and he stated they couldn’t find the timing marks and had to use a dial gauge on the #1 piston to locate tdc and go from there. He said it was a long time ago and he couldn’t remember the procedure.
 
I found the timing mark on the injection pump. The manual says there is a cover on the right side of the engine to locate the rear timing mark but I do not see it.

There is a small opening below the starter with a cover. That is where you can see the timing marks on the flywheel at the rear of the engine.
 
There is marks on flywheel. Have had to use brake cleaner to clean oil off. Need to pull rocker cover so when #1 is on compression stroke.
 
Thanks for the information. I installed the reman head yesterday using copper coat on the head gasket. Wanted to get the pump installed/timed today but drove to the shop without the service manual. Took it home to study and forgot to bring it with me this morning. Went on Messicks this afternoon to see how the fuel lines go on. The grandson told me yesterday the tractor was taken apart about a year and a half ago. Some small parts are missing so I put it together until I figure out what I don’t have then get the missing pieces and move on.
 
This is the opening under the starter next to the oil pan. There are stamped letters am visible on the flywheel through the opening. This is the only opening I see under the starter. What does the timing mark look like and which way does the engine spin looking at it from the front?

I do not see a timing pointer or arrow stamped near the opening. Do I assume that the timing mark on the flywheel be centered in the opening is what needs to be for the injection pump be in time. This is a first for me timing an injection pump.
 
I found the timing arrow on the engine and the 0 degree and 2 degree marks on the flywheel. I aligned the arrow with the 0 degree mark and will proceed to install and time the injection pump. Thanks so much for your help.
 
Have you got it at TDC at the end of the exhaust stroke or the end of the compression stroke? The timing marks will line up on either stroke, you need to be at the top end of the compression stroke.

If you timed it a 0 degrees on the flywheel that’s wrong
Flywheel should be at 19 degrees and pump marks lined up
 
How do I know if if on compression stroke? At this time both valves are closed and pointer is at 0 on the flywheel. Which direction does the engine spin when looking at it from the front? Is there a timing mark at 19 degrees? I will time the injection pump after the flywheel is at 19 degrees at the timing mark.
