Ford 4000 Hydraulic System Problem

Hello all,
I have a Ford 4000 3-cylinder diesel with one speed 540 PTO. I have a two bottom plow attached to the 3-point link bar for about 6 months. Now I tried to lift the two bottom plow and nothing happend. I unhooked the two bottom plow and still nothing. Has anyone experience such problem? What could be wrong? Does it has anything to do with low hydrolic or rear axle fluid? My ford 4000 is a gear shift. It has one stick on the right to shift for low and high and one on the left is for select a speed 1,2,3 and R.

are you saying you have a 6spd in a 4000? I'd sure like to see a pic of that.

if the utf fluid level is ok, you might have a sticky unloading valve.

Thanks Brian,

I will give it a try. That"s what I thought because I had a leak somewhere around the back axle and front transmission. I wasn"t sure if it"s a rear axle fluid or front transmission fluid. Does the rear axle and hydraulic system use the same fluid in the rear axle?

Hi soundguy,

There are some hand written of 1,2,3 an R by marker from the previous owner. I wasn't sure if it's a 6 or 8 speed. I’m new to the tractor world and not familiar with tractor. Where or how can I check the utf fluid level and sticky unloading valve?

there is a level plug for the rear sump fluid.. check your manual. Start there.. if the fluids low.. no need to get into pulling the top cover yet.

you sure it's a 4000? we've seen people sell macines and describe them wrong.. maybee someone sold you a 2000 with a 6spd...?

post a pic.

also, post the sn, date code, and model id code from the flat on the trans bellhousing just aft of the starter.

Feel around with the gears, I bet it's either an 8x2, which will have 4 forward gears and one reverse in each range or a 6x4 which will have three forward and two reverse in each range. I could be wrong though.

Just a note concerning thr transmission speed on a Ford 4000, friend of mine just dropped of an early Ford 4000, 3 cylinder diesel and it has a 3 speed foward and reverse with the high-low range. Main shift pattern is left & foward,1st,left & back is 2nd, right & foward is 3rd, and right & back is reverse. The high-low lever gives the fast & slow speed in each gear.

My tractor has 3 speeds exactly as described by LsTra. I"ve checked my trans/hydraulic fluid and they all appeared to be fined. I had a lots of fluid flowed thru the level plug on the rear axle (hydraulic pump plate). About half quarts of hydraulic fluid has flown from the hydraulic level plug and it still continue to flow so I plugged the level plug back in to stop it. I believed I might have overfilled of hydraulic fluid in the rear axle. As I moved the lift control lever up and down, I noticed that the draft control lever is also moved slightly. Did this indicate that I have a damage on the draft/position control linkage? I also lifted the lift arm with hand while the engine is running and I able to lift it up and down freely. I wasn"t sure if it has anything to do with no presure or not. Any advice is appreciated.

you don't have 2 reverses do ya?

i've never seen a 6spd in anything other than a plain jane 2000.. ( not counting a 6x4 )

All I knew I had 3 speed forward and 1 reverse with a high and low shift. I"m more concern about the hydraulic problem than the speed so I will need sometime to pin point the hydraulic problem before getting in depths of the speed. I will do a closer look of the gear and see if I have 4 forward and 1 reserve or 3 forward and 2 reverse once the hydraulic problem is resolved.

Thanks all for any advice.

the only reason I ask is to make sure we are actually working on a 4000 and not a 2000 witht he wrong decals... have seen it before..

that's why i also asked about the model id number on the flat of the trans bellhousing...

Thanks everyone for your input. I finally got my tractor back to work after I paid someone to check the unloader valve and replaced some of the O-rings. I also changed the hydraulic fluid and took out the pump for inspection. Not sure what"s the problem but the good thing is it"s working.

For the speed, it was an 8 speed transmission. The fourth one is way to the right and then up. This was the one that I haven"t noticed it"s there.
