Ford 4500 spindle pin

Hello. Can anyone tell me how the spinle pins are removed in a 4500? I am trying to replace the bushings in the spindle. The bearings were missing and there is a lot of wear. Are they pressed in? Is it bad to use heat and drive the pins out?

First you tear down the front axle from the steering drag link.
Next, you have to remove the steerin arm from the top of the spindle. The spindle then slides out through the bottom of the of the axle extender, both sides. Then you remove the axle extenders from the axle, both sides. Very important. Mark your axle extenders R and L for when you put it back together. It helps trust me because I made that same mistake. Also mark your spindles R & L. Did the same mistake as well. Cut or drive out old bushings. Press in new bushings. Very Important. the new bushings are smaller than your spindle shafts, because of wear on the spindle shafts. Take your spindles and your axle extentions to your local machine shop. The new bushings have to be reamed out to fit your spindle shafts. Do not press the spindless into your axle extentions. Won't work. And yes Made that mistake as well. Had to get another set of bushings for one side. By marking every thiong L or R, every thing will be exact for both sides, an every thing will fit properly when back together. I hope this helps.

A 4500 has a completely different front axle from what you are thinkin of.

Once you get the lock pin (bolt) out, the kingpin "should" drive out. Heat is appropriate, along with a large hammer.

I redid a 4600 with the heavy duty (agricultural) front end (uses one rod on the left side,rather than 2 for linking to the steering box). It was as Bruce said. I removed the tire and wheel, undid the bolt holding and removed the steering arm, jacked up the front end and out the bottom it came. Used a chisel and punch to "find the edge of the bushings and drive them out.

Put a little lube on the new ones and with a 3 lb mall and good quality 2x4 wooden block I drove them back in very carefully to insure that they were going in straight.

A grove usually develops on the spindle so you may have to do some turning and wiggling to get the grove through the bushing as it is coming out.
