Ford 5000 w/loader info needed

I am looking at a Ford 5000 to buy. Wondering what your thoughs on it might be.. good or bad is fine.

They're good tractors although a bit dated now in some ways. If you want big hydraulic capacity, look forward more. Otherwise it's one of the most reliable tractors Ford ever built, and one of the best of it's time, PERIOD. I'd be looking for a later one... say 72-75 if I was stuck on a 5000.

I agree with Rod.. if you are getting a 5000.. get one with the 256 deisel engine.. and either the manual steering.. or the later power steering.

i also agree that they were one of fords best built tractors.

If you move a tad newer.. say into a 5600.. almost same tractor with some hyd updates.. etc..

7000 is basically same with more ponies..

Sound, Most of the time I would agree with you but I know Larry and he as a 3 acre place so the 5000 is just way to much tractor for what he has. I've told him he need to find a 660 or 661 or an 860 or 861. Those would fit what he has a lot better. Plus I know the JD-A he has will pull circle around a 5000 I know because I have been there done that and even have a funny story behind that

I have a 1975 5000 with a ford loader,ps, 256,I also had a 1968 and 1970 5000 the best tractor ford made we have 15 tractors my 2nd is my 3600 and long 610 4x4 thanks carman PS on the A thing we have a JD A B 420 & L the 5000 is tops

Old, with all due respect, I'd say it would be an awful special set of circumstances where an 'A' would outpull the 5000. The 5000 has more than twice the power of the 'A' though they are probably fairly close in terms of weight and rubber...
We had a 5610 for many years and it was one of the best pulling two wheel drive tractors I've ever seen. We've also got an 860 and it's clearly one of the poorest I've ever seen. The Massey 135/230 class of tractor is perhaps the only one I've ever seen that was more challenged for traction. You could probably hook the three of them to a 5610 and the 5610 would drag the three of them, all with their wheels spinning.
I spent a lot of hours on and 860; all of them spinning or the front end in the air. Nostalgia is the only reason I keep that tractor anymore. It's certainly not here for it's functional use...

Theres a story about this and I was the one on both tractors. BTDT and let say the JD A hands down did in fact out pull the 5000. I know 100% sure since I was the person who sat on the seat of both and I did in fact brake a hay wagon with the A that the 5000 didn't even pull. E-mail me if you want the full story. Old.. His message didn't say anything about land size.. he just asked about a 5000.

Besides.. if he wants to take a 30 year step back in technology and features he can keep that A. A 5000 will be leaps and bounds ahead in things like hyds, and pto and transmission options.. not to mention the engine.. egen if it is a gasser, traction issues aside.

Ya I under stand that. I just know where hes at etc. and a 500 is way more tractor then he needs. Shoot its all he can do to turn that A around were he lives. But of course I have also hand my hands on his A so I know a lot more about what he has then you do which is a plus at times when talking to people

besides.. if he has 3 ac.. he should have plenty of room for the 5000. i routinely mow the 3ac around my house with a 5000 and 10' mower.

Like Sound and Rod said they are good tractors. There are alot of them in this country. To get an idea of how good they are look at how long they made'm. My brother has a 6610 II that is (I think) a 96 model. It has a few bells and whisles but is pretty much just like a 5000 in alot of ways. I know of one that has been in chicken houses (hard life) for the last ten years and the guy who owns it would NOT sell it. He told me a while back if it burned up next week he might update to 5600 to replace it if he could not find another 5000 real quick.

I have a 5000, and would recommend one in a heartbeat. Very fuel efficient if it a diesel, and enough power to run darn near anything you can hook to it. Mine has a large loader on it, which make it a little light in the tail section, just be aware of a 2 wheel drive tractor and heavy loader can get you in trouble during wet weather as I have stuck mine. Front wheels buried, and the rear wheels spinning nearly on top. Mine is a completely different animal with the loader removed. Easy to maneuver, plenty of power, and run it all day on a very little fuel. Some mentioned you may only have a few acres. I have 110 acres, and in my opinion less than 20 or 30 acres would be overkill for the 5000. I also have an 8N and I hate to say it I pull out the N much more than I do the diesel. With just a few acres you might take a look at one of the 3 cylinder Fords, say a 3000? I once looked at a 3910, and really liked what I saw, but just too small for running a big round baler.

Sound if its an open 3 acres ya but remember we live in the hills of missouri where your lucky to have 10 foot of flat ground any where. Now if it was my place no problem but Larrys place if mostly trees and rocks

Yep very true. Only reason I could give have a better answer was because I know where he lives and have been there. If he wants a tractor one in the 601 range would be more then enough for his place

Yep, been telling him he needs something in the 860 or 660 or 661 or 861 line. For the area he has any one of them would do just fine nd PS would be a plus since he wants it to have a loader on it for using when he cuts fire wood

Yep.. ps makes a loader nice-er. Both my loaders are non PS.. meaning i don't steer untill I start moving.... Throw a round bale on the laoder and it is real 'armstrong' steering.. even when moving!
