Ford 5000 wont go in reverse

Hi guys, I have a 1967 ford 5000 that will not go into reverse. It will go forward high gears but not low gears. In fact when I try low gears it wants to kill engine. Is there anything I can do to Identify problem? Thanks in advance for advice.

This sounds like a standard 8 speeds forward and two reverse that the slector has slipped out of position. I would try taking the top cover of the transmission, put all the slides in the neutral position then make sure the shift levers are in the neutral position and replace the cover keeping the levers and slectors in neutral positions. HTH

Thanks HTH, I am kind of a novice at this so what your saying is take the cover off where my feet would be sitting and take a look.Which way do those forks work? In/down/OUt etc. In other words when I put hi/low speed in Neutral and shifter in Neutral no forks should be on a gear right? So to move them out which way do I slide them? Thanks.

Get a buddy to help you nudge the tractor to / fro and once you get all in neutrall, the tractor will roll.

( hey.. that rhymes! )

Once you get it open, you should be able to see the flat landings where the shifter sits. All the dogs should be aligned and open in the center for it to be in neutral. I also guess that you will see the bottom of your shifter is worn and will need to be built up so it doesn't happen again. The high/low is a slide, front to rear, so I'm not sure what you will find in there, but probably a similar situation where the shifter has allowed one to get away from the end of reach.

How hard is it to replaced these parts? What kind of a bill am I looking at if I take it in? Thanks.

Sounds like a broken shift fork to me. Keep in mind that the 2nd-R fork is two piece. It's usually the bottom one that breaks, and the bad news is, the tranny has to come apart to replace it.

I guess it's hard to say until you are inside and see what's going on in there. If it's simple and can be addressed from the top, it could be pretty reasonable to fix. If you are planning to have the work done at a shop and like Bern says it needs to come apart, I expect it'll be more than a few hundred dollars. I swapped out a complete 8 speed tranny (from a junk yard) for under $1,500 but did the labor myself on my 5600. I don't know the labor involved with changing a shift fork in there once the tractor is split.

Put everything into neutral last night and took cover off. To me everything looked good. Not a lot of wear noticed anywhere. Hi/Low shifted fine.Everything from top looked good. Put cover back on and seems to shift into all gears good. Now I have to wait for my starter to get fixed so I can see if it shifts.... Odd. Starter and shifting went out at the same time. Starter was getting bad though. Only thing I can think of is something might be broken below in the oil that I can see.If I drain all the oil will I be able to see that second fork you guys are talking about? Thanks.

You need to put all the slides in the neutral position (middle position) while you have the top off, this gets everything in the right place.
Also the levers should be in the neutral position when you put the cover back on.
It may be that it is in two gears at the same time binding and not being able to move. HTH
