I am fixin up a ford 5000 it was stuck in high range i took the cover of the tranny and fixed the problem. The next thing I need to fix is the pto is stuck on. The lever on the left of the seat (when sitting on the tractor)moves back and forward about 3 inches but doesn't seem like its hooked to anything. Anyone have an idea on how to fix it. thanks

Time to get a parts manual and a ford service manual.

That is an independent clutch , and the handle controls the oil flow to the clutch pack.

could be warped discs.. I guess.. or bad valve..

One thing.. is it really stuck powered on.. or will it only freewheel in one position.. ( could be bad pto break )..

I had the same problem with my PTO when I got my 5000. If I remember corectly there is a nut with a slotted bolt in front of the PTO lever. This holds the PTO brake housing that the lever activates. If someone turns that locating bolt out the whole assembly falls down and you have no PTO. You can get to it from an port below the left foot rest. Jack up the left side of the tractor when you take the cover off or you will loose your oil. It was not a big job to fix it once I found out what was wrong.
