Ford 5000 - Running rough and quits running. I posted last week about my 5000 running rough and then quiting. I have tried some of the suggestions and now have another one. I pulled the tank tap and everything looked fine. It appeared that the valve was not getting a good flow so I blew it out. I really thought this was going to be the problem.....but nope. I loosened the line to the bottom of the primer pump and had fuel. I loosened the top line and worked the lever and didn't get any fuel. I am guessing the primer diaphram has to be bad. Is removing/working on the pump and replacing the diaphram a shade tree mechanic type repair? The tractor is still in the woods and I can't get it to run long enough to get it home.

I've never looked to see if you can get just the diaphram. The (whole) lift pump isn't overly expensive. Available from NH, on eBay, etc. I'm not too fond of the cheap imported ones, but I'm also not sure there's a lot of choice. Pretty easy to r&r.

if you can find the kit,, R&R..

lots of times the valves springgy things are stuck and you can clean them and get it pumping again. Theres a valve on the input side and one on the output side. then theres the diapram....

as said the pump is not overly expensive. Good luck.

btw.... fuel will not gravity flow through that pump... as I remember from previous tests...

so just loosening the line will not prove much on a good pump unless your pumping the lever. It is possible for the engine to stop where the cam lobe is high and holding the pump all the way in.. so some times you need to bump the starter, and then pump the diapram.. but I would still clean the check vavles anyway and inspect the diaphram... just be carefull when you separate the pump halves so you dont rip the diaphram. good luck.. Take 7/16 head bolt out some have screen in there others do not. Mine was running sluggish took cover off. Full of black slimmey stuff. cleaned out, put back together and now runs fine.

I took the cover off it was filled all black gritty stuff. Still no luck cranking though. The rubber seal has 2 small slits on 2 sides of the screw hole. I think it is losing pressure there. I turned the engine over with the cover off and fuel pumped out.
