I"ve never been around a Ford 5000 but I"ve heard several older farmers say it was the best tractor they ever owned. I am wanting a different tractor to pull my 9" haybine. Have any of you had experience using a 5000 ? Would they make a good tractor for mowing. What were the transmission options ? Most of my hay fields lay pretty good but do mow some on steep hills. Thanks.

Well mine has 8 speed with independent pto and only other way they were avaible was with 10 speed ,selectospeed with indepentent pto.

I've had my 5000 Diesel for several years now, it has the SOS and I love it for cutting, raking, tedding and baling hay. I have a 9 foot Gehl 1090 Haybine and it pulls it fine. The baler is a JD336 baler and it handles that fine until I get a fairly large load of bales in the trailer. The SOS is handy when wanting to change speeds on the fly depending on conditions. It's a little fast for the snow blower though.

Just after painting. It looks better with the new tires than in this picture.

i have a 75 5000 diesel ( 256ci vs the 233 early model )with 8spd.. I pull a 10' 3pt mower with it. handles it better than my 7610s and 15' mower. has never lacked for power.

The 1971 and up with the bigger engine and select-o-speed transmission have plenty of power and if they have been properly maintained they are almost bullet proof.

Had a 5610 years ago that was basically just a 5000, but 2 generations newer... One of the best tractors we ever owned.
Transmission was an 8x2 crashbox... which is absolutely bulletproof. It's just not a loader transmission if you've got that in mind... but for basic utility work it can't be beat. Far as I'm concerned... the S-O-S falls into the category of 'also ran'... and leave it where it's at.
The 5000 will easily handle the 9' haybine. It'll also stand up well to just about any other chore on the farm.

I have a 74 5000D with dual pwr and a Quickie front loader. It is the best tractor I've ever had!I also have an 841D that I use on a regular basis and work hard. I also have a Jube that I use to mow, all are hard working tractors and are a great combination. I am a true believer in Ford tractors.

I have a 5000 which is actually a 5200 - the tall version, wuth dual power (16 forward, 4 reverse), independent pto, good power.

Wold be a great tractor for you. No I'm not selling it. ;)

Understand the issues of a SoS tranny before buying that tranny - people either love them or hate tyhem, depending if it ever wore out while they owned it. Around this area it is a negative for the possible money-pit issues. When they work they are certainly handy & nice.

Have a 5000 with a M&W turbo on it and it is a great all around tractor. Good for most tasks from plow/disking/mowing/raking/baling/blowing snow etc. Mine is a MFWD model from roadless and it is handy as heck, not sure where I would be without it.

We had 2 5000's on the farm, a 65 / 8 speed and a 69 selecto-speed, both great tractors. Still have the 69 with a 727 loader on it.
