[/b][color=darkred:bd72bb9ca0][/color:bd72bb9ca0] We just bought a ford 555 backhoe 4 wheel drive, was supposed to be in good working condition . After running it for half an hour we discovered that the transmission has no power when pushing anything. We put it up to a pile of dirt and it will just sit there , make no noise at all , just no power in 2 or 4 wheel drive . You can drive it around and it drives great .The motor has power and runs like a top , it digs well , the hydraulics work well . What is wrong with the transmission ? anyone have a clue? :?:

Yeah its prolly converter or clutches. Not familiar with the breakdown but if you can find the shaft from the converter to the rear end and put it under a load (push dirt etc.) and the shaft stops spinning you've prolly got urself a bad converter.

Have you checked the oil level in the transmission and changed the filter? Yes, it could be a clutch pack or torque converter problem, but start out with the easy stuff.

carol allan,
is the motor getting up to operating rpm? If not, might be a clogged air filter. Take it out and see if the rpms and power improve.

I want to thank everyone who posted . We have been checking out your tips as we get time and so far we discovered that the trans filter is a oil filter . I don't know if they double as trans filters or not but doubting it . Do any of yous knows?

When you say "oil filter" you mean engine oil filter? That would be typically wrong - but that's a guess.

Have you looked up the filter numbers?
