Ford 600 or NAA?

I just purchased a small Ford tractor at consignment auction. The seller was sure it is an NAA, but from what I've been able to learn, it might be a later model, possibly a 600. The serial number plate (next to the starter) has two numbers. The top number is 21201; below it is the number 5230. Can anyone tell me what model and year tractor I have?

Alan:

Inspect the rear hubs and brakes. If the hubs are attached to the axle with a large 2 1/2" (?) nut, it is an NAA if the hub and axle is one piece it is a hundred series.

The brakes are also different. NAA brakes are smaller in diameter but wider while hundred series brakes are less wide but larger in diameter.

And the other possibility is that you have a mutt- a tractor assembled from parts of more than 1 tractor. The NAA, 600, 601 and early 2000 all used the 134 cu in engine so you may have an NAA engine attached to the trans and rear axle from a 2000. Or some other combination.

John has the correct info based on the numbers you have provided. BUT! It is also possible that you have either an NAA or a 600 that has had its transmission replaced with a junkyard unit taken from a 2000. Photos would help nail it down. I'll try to provide some examples from the photo gallery on this site.

A 2000 as described by your numbers, should look like this:

Notice the shape of the grille and hood. Then compare it with the NAA:

As you can see, the NAA has a round hood emblem that is not present on the 2000. The 600 will look essentially the same as the NAA so if your tractor most resembles the second photo, look at the rear axle hub as suggested by Dean. If there's a big nut on the end of the axle hub, it's an NAA. If not, it's either a 600 or 800.

As the others said.. lots of possibilities.. post some pics and we can help you id it further.

It looks like a 600 to me. I can't see the front of the hood, but it looks from the side like it has the round front emblem. That would eliminate the 2000 as a possibility.

I also see no large nut on the rear hub. The fenders do not look like 601 fenders, so I'm guessing 600 with a 2000 transmission transplant. The other thing that eliminates NAA as a possibility is the one-piece hydraulic manifold. The NAA had two separate hydraulic lines running from the pump to the underside of the tractor.

Thanks for the help guys. Some other things I noticed that might have some significance: the hood does not have the embossed FORD script, but is smooth; the brake pedals have rods that extend up behind the seat pan for locking the brakes. The instrument panel has a fuel guage, but no ammeter. There is a small red light to indicate whether or not the genator is charging properly.

If the dash has a charging idiot light and no amp meter that piece is from a 601 or a 2000. The 600 and NAA did not come with that dash. We also know you have a trans from a 2000.
So that narrows it down to.......
You have a 601 with a trans out of a 2000 (good chance this is true if the tractor was orginally a SOS trans) or you have a 2000 with a 601 hood.

Lets do this. Look at the pictures of the tractor date codes on <a href="http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y137/johnLA/">THIS</a> web site.
Now tell us what #'s and letters your tractor has and what part you got them from. Be VERY specific. If the letter looks upside down tell us that. We need all letters; numbers; and marks in the circle I have in the pictures.
With this info we should be able to tell you the exact day each part was made.

John, the photos on your website are very helpful. As you suggested, I looked at some of the other part numbers, and here is what I came uo with: the rear end date code reads 2H15;below that are the numbers 312478; the trans date code is #310835; below that are the numbers 2H23; the engine date code is: 62B1; the radiator date code is: D61; the hydaulic cover date is: NCA 51 and also the number 2H14. If you can make any sense out of all this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again for your help.

OK lets see if we can pick these #'s apart and find out what you have.

We already know if the transmission you have is original your tractor should have been built in Oct of 1962. The serial # tells us this.

You list a trans date code of 2H23
This piece was cast on Aug 23 1962 That was a Thursday and is before the tractor build date so that fits.

Your rear end date code is 2H15
This piece was cast on Wednesday Aug 15 1962
This date shows at least the rear end is from a 2000 also.

For the Hyd top cover you list NCA 51 then 2H14.
I am betting if you check it again it really says......
NCA 501 Then there is a B under that; Then under that is 2H14:
If I am correct this piece was cast on Tuesday Aug 14 1962
This shows it is also from a 2000.

For your radiator you list D61. I think if you check this again it really is a #/61 The # is the month and 61 is the year 1961.
Also on the radiator you should see NCA-.
This will show you this is a radiator for the 134 cu in engine. If this was a larger tractor with a 172 cu in engine it would say NDA-.

Now lets look at the engine code. You list 62B1.
This is the one I was worried about.
Tell me if my assumption is right here.
There is a large C with what looks like a F in it. Then on what looks like a little tag you have 62 a screw head and then B. Then there is a space of about 1 inch and then 1.
Is this correct?????????
If so this engine was cast on Thursday Feb 2 1956. This would make this engine out of a 600 tractor.

While it is hard to see the front of your tractors hood it does look like it is off a 600 or 601.

So by the #'s you have given; and if my assumptions are right you seem to have a trans and rear end from a 2000 and a engine and hood from a 600.
Since you have a dash from a 601 or 2000 I am going to guess and say that this tractor was a 2000 that somewhere along the line had engine problems.
Rather than rebuilding the engine they just swapped out the front half of a 600.
I would not be surprised to find out that your front axle is from a 600 also.

Hopefully awhtx or others will read this a check my dates to see if they agree or disagree.

John: I checked that engine date code number again; what I found is the 62B.1 number (cast upside down) on a sort of oval "badge" with the srewlike symbol on either side and with no spaces between the numbers. A few inches to the right of the date code is the number "1" (right side up) on the same kind of oval badge with the screw symbol on either side.

Look on the right side of the engine block and see if you find something similar to one of these number cast into the block:
EAE 6015 H
C0NN 6015 H
Post back with your findings.

Alan V;
Do as awhtx ask. This will narrow down what you have a great deal.

Now my thoughs..........
"I THINK" on the right side of the motor you are going to find EAE 6015 cast into the side of the block.

Also if you look at this date code from a fellow poster I am going to bet yours looks very simular.
Yours says 62B:1 where as this picture says 58B:1

If my thoughts are correct then you do have a engine made on Feb 2, 1956 and that means your engine is from a 600 and the rear of your tractor is from a 2000.

Let us know what you find out.

John, you nailed it. The number on the right side of the engine is indeed EAE 6015.J. I sure wish this tractor could talk, I bet it would have an interesting story to tell. I wonder what is more likey - a 600 in which the transmission and read end went bad or a 2000 that needed the engine replaced. The other question is, when someone asks me what's the model number of that tractor, what do I say- a 600, 601, or 2000? Anyway, thanks for all the help you guys gave me; this is a great board.

I think a lot of these old tractors have many stories they could tell. I was even very surprised at the things you can learn by talking to different guys on this site.

Since this motor is out a 600 tractor and the world famous (for breaking down) SOS trans had not come out yet I have to put my money on this was a 2000 tractor that blew a engine.

If someone ask what kind of tractor this is my answer would depend on the reason for them asking. If they needed to know so I could get the right replacement part I would consider everything from the flywheel forward as a 600 and all the rest as a 2000.
If they were looking to buy it or just wanted to know the model I would have to say it is a 2000. Your serial and model # proves it and very few people would know that this engine is not a original motor from a 2000.

Have fun with your new tractor and do not be a stranger. New comers are always welcome here.
