My dad is looking at a ford 6000 with the s.o.s. tranny in it. Are there ways to check if the tranny is good or not? Or is there anything else to watch out for on these tractors? thanx Steve
 
You'll get more resposes on the Ford forum, but here's what I know about them... All 6000's came with the S-O-S - no other transmissions were available for it. The 6-cylinder in the 6000's was the biggest ever put in front of a s-o-s, and tested the limits of the tranny. Best to try every gear before you buy, and run it long enough to get it fully warmed up. Do something to WORK it if at all possable. If there are any slipping or non-functioning gears, it could need an oil and filter change and band adjustment, or thousands of $$ in repairs, assuming you can find the needed parts and a mechanic willing to work on it. There are ways to check pressures on it, but thats beyond what I know about them.
 

When I was farming we briefly owned a 6000 diesel, but because of shoddy engine repair before we bought it never gave it any meaningful test. I'm not sure of the accuracy of the information, but were told that the engine was basically a 300 ci truck engine, not beefed up in the lower end to really be a diesel. I would be very cautious if the one you're considering isn't a gas job.
 
The 6000 engine was based on the earlier 261 c.i. truck engine. It had nothing in common with the 300. The 300 would have been a better choice since it 7 main bearings instead of 4 like the 6000.

These make great static display tractors meaning I hope you do not plan to use it. For what it takes to repair one buy a good tractor to start with.
 
I keep hearing that the gas 6000's 223 cubic inch engine was based on the Ford car 223, which it may be, although I have my doubts. The diesel 6000's were a 3.62 bore and 3.9 stroke, 241.7 cubic inch. You are right that it has nothing in common with the 300, but I doubt that it has much of anything in common wiht the 261, either.
 
I once heard of a 6000 diesel that had been retrofitted with a 261 block, converted to diesel. The problem was that it kept stretching the main bearing cap bolts. They were smaller diameter than the original diesel engine.
 
Try it in every gear. You should have a speed change with every shift - some more than others. Run it in a higher gear - 8 or 9, and slow it down with the brakes. It should bog down the engine also.
