my tractor isnt firing. it has new points, new plugs and wires, new condensor, new cap, new coil. all the wires test good. power is getting to the coil but past it theres nothing. any help would be appreciated.

Open coil or short circuit in the distributor it self.Sounds like you are a parts changer, learn how the ignition works.

yea, i am a parts changer, and it sounds like your a smart elic. I didnt want to be a mechanic and if some hackjob sorry excuse for one, probably like you, would have fixed it right in the first place, i wouldnt be having to mess with it now. Get a life, if all you have to do is get online and throw off on people that just need some help. You must be some kind of idiot. Just because you love rolling around in grease and oil doesnt mean everyone else does. I dont buy stuff to work on it, i buy stuff to work WITH it. Thats why i bought the tractor in the first place. If you know so much about how the igniton works, how about YOU explain it in detail genious.

Check the little copper connector in the bottom of the distributor. It runs from the inside of the terminal where the wire from the coil connects to the points. Also check the insulators where this terminal passes through the distributor body. They could be bad causing a direct short to ground. The new coil could possibly be faulty too. Is it hot on the distributor side if the wire from it to the distributor is disconnected?

Let us know what you find.

As Larry said.

help us help you.

Do you have voltage at the coil primary where the wire from the key hits the coil?

Do you have voltage on the other side ( wire going to side of distrib )? If yes, and it stays on all the time, then there is an open down the line.. IE.. points not closing, or the copper transfer bar from the side of distrib is cracked.

Points should be gapped .025 when the rubbing block is on the high part of the lobe.

If you show no power ont he wire headed to the distrib, unless you disconnect it.. the points are shorted.. or the insulator going thru the distrib is shorted.

small possibility the coil is open..

Brandon 36 is telling you like it is. You need to step back and take what he said in the way I know he meant it. Pull the cap back off, the rotor and dust cover. Turn on the switch and open and close the points by hand. Do you get a spark when you do?? If you do then pull the coil wire off the center of the cap and hold it close to the block and make sure you have spark when you open and close the points. If you have that then you problaby do not have a spark problem but a fuel problem instead. If you do not have spark at the points back track from there to see where you loose power

I know how an ignition works.you dont.I have worked on engines since 1950.If it wasnt for greasy mechanics every one would be walking or riding a horse. Most of my working days where spent in electronics.I could figure out why a Model A didnt have spark when I was 14 years old so I get a laugh when people cant fix a simple ignition.Your spelling needs improvement too.You will never get much work out of your tractor until you learn to do simple repairs. The nearest tractor dealer is 18 miles away and gets 90.00 per hour for on farm work.I have taken care of my tractors and equipment for 43 years here and 15 years be fore that in another state. The mechanics I know around here make a good living working in their own garages and none are greasy.

Aw, gees, Coupe! Lighten up. You ain't any more perfect than any of the rest of us, me included! You wanta give english lessons, take a look at your own grammar!!!

thanks for the help. and coupe, i respect you for what you do and didnt mean anything by the greasy thing, im just frustrated with this tractor and honestly, the only thing i ever owned with points is a 72 torino and never had any problems out of it so never needed to learn how it worked. yes i checked those things and no i have no spark when the points open.

You get spark when the points open, after having been closed, and the coil powered. You need to verify that the points are opening and closing using a meter, and then chack to make sure you have power at the top of the coil.

If you are going to use a 50 year old tractor you are going to learn how to fix it when it acts up.It will do it often.

I said that he should understand what he is working on.Our teachers often said ,You have the right answer, now show me how you got it.The 601 ignition system is simple and should be easy to fix.Throwing parts at problem costs money. If you do this on a customers job you will lose the customers.Nothing wrong with my Christmas ,,Back off.
