Interested in any feedback from folks regarding a Ford 800 tractor which I am considering buying. The tractor has a 172 CI engine and is in pretty decent shape except for a very minor oil leak from the lower crank case gasket. Evidently the repair shop which I believe is very honest and reputable replaced the 2 gaskets twice but they just weren't able remedy the minor leak in this area. While using the tractor one would have to add a cup of oil every now and then. I am wondering if the repair which is made using some kind of chinese finger tool or device might not have been done properly. I'd like to try tinkering with the tractor and possibly restore for parades and light yard use but I am a little afraid that this problem might not be repairable could get worse, or maybe it is the engine main seal that leaks.

The information provided is insufficient for me to determine where the oil is leaking but your comment about the "chinese finger tool" indicates that the shop used a "sneaky pete" to change one or both crankshaft seals.

A sneaky pete is a tool made to install the upper portion of a rope type crankshaft seal without removing the crankshaft.

Leak free installation is always questionable when so doing, especially with the new type rope seals.

No more than you plan to use it, adding a little oil every now and then should not be of a great concern. It is repairable, but you might have to take the motor out and do it right. Not a big deal but time consuming. It is a lot easier to add oil.

I appreciate the feedback from you guys. After test running the tractor I decided it wasn"t for me. Good thing too because the next day I came across a really clean and great running Ford 641 Workmaster model tractor that I am picking up tomorrow. Same price but it looks like it was always stored indoors and well taken care of. It"s really a nice tractor and should be fairly easy to restore.
