Ford 8n Paint

I'm going to start painting a 1949 8n.

For ease of paint clean-up and easiness, I plan on using spray cans.

The Spray paint that seems the most affordable is Rustolem Ford Red and Ford Grey.

I was reading that there were three different types of Ford Grey (Light, Medium, and Dark) And that supposedly the 8n's would have been the medium grey.

Does anyone know what Ford Grey the Rustoleum Ford Grey is most like?

Any other suggestions?

O.K. so I'm just going to give you my opinion which may set the purist's heads a'spinnin.
Listen to them before me....
My experience with Rustolium:
It never completely dries.
It leaves a soft rubbery finish that is prone to pealing, nicks and dents. This after using their rattle cans, and quarts through a gun.
Maybe I didn't know what I was doing.
Flipside, XO-Rust is the BOMB!
I painted our 2N with "tractor red" back in the early 90s.
(Yeah; wrong color. Save your breath)
HARD AS ROCK!! Great color!

There are probably better paints for sure.
Listen to the pros.

I'm not a fan of rattle can jobs.
Brush paint it. Buy a couple cans of
tractor and machinery enamel and a good
china bristle brush.
Takes two coats but looks good, shines
nice and lasts a looong time. First coat
straight out of the can. Second coat add
a wee bit of thinner.
It's cheaper than a bunch of spray cans.
Make sure you use a china bristle brush.
1 1/2" angle brush is just right. Home
Depot has them. $15

Did I mention china bristle?

I concur with Ultradog - and offer this: Let a qualified paint/bump shop paint your sheet metal -good work and not expensive. Trying to rattle can sheet metal is not a good idea. Your cast iron parts, all FORD Vermillion (8N Red) is best applied with a brush and you can touch up with rattle can later to get brush marks out. Budget acrylic enamel paint is best using TISCO, made by Van Sickle Paint. For the 8N the best to use is the TISCO IH RED, TP-110 as it is an almost perfect match for the original Vermillion. All other paint labeled Ford Red is too orangy. TISCO Ford Medium Grey comes real close as well. I was at my CNH the other day and they've once agin changed things. One is the paint, still Iron Gard but totally different. Only one Red now and is the orangey stuff, and, the Ford MED Grey says it is for tractors used from '94-2004. Huh???? 1994??? I tried Rustoleum Sunrise Red once and didn't like it -still a hint of the orangey stuff. I only found one other red paint that closely matched to OEM 8N and that was years ago at a local auto parts store and it was the Dupli-Color brand. It listed as used on GM products, I forget what years, but never found it again.

9N/2N = TISCO FORD DARK GREY M-2888

8N = FORD VERMILLION (RED)M-2822 - TISCO IH TP110 CLOSEST MATCH

8N (AND UP) = FORD MEDIUM GREY M-13243 - TISCO TP-240

8N (AND UP) = *CNH IRON-GARD© ®™ M1J-957 SE4DS

*NOTE: CNH brand says used '39/62' but that isn't right. This is the FORD MEDIUM GREY and not used on the 39-47 Models. CNH no longer makes a Ford M2888 Dark Grey shade.

The newest CNH/IronGard brand I bought the other day says 'FORD RED -Used 1939-1962'. Huh??? Ford didn't start using the Vermillion (8N Red) until 1947. FWIW & FYI it is p/n M1J956SE5DSLF. I have not tried it yet but the cap shows it to be the later Ford Red-Orange ---- tests to follow soon...

I can't comment on what colors but Rustoleum rattle can goes on much nicer than I ever expected.
I recently painted an appliance door about 2'X2' and it turn out great as the wife said so.
Read the directions about re coat time. You will probably need at least 2 coats.
But I have never painted a tractor with rattle cans as I spray them with my very old Binks # 7.

Tim,

When painting on the Tisco red with a paint brush. Do you just use the paint straight? Or do you had an acrylic hardener to the paint - when you brush it on?

What primer would you recommend?

I'm currrently working on the rims. What paint would you recommend for the inside of the Rims?

Thanks!

Affordable and Rattle cans just doesn't go together. 18 years ago I took the sheet metal of my 960 to a pro, and I painted the red parts myself. I got four cans. Then I went back and got four more. Then I got six more. Then I got one more. There is more surface area than you think.

When I painted my 8N red in 2003, I used it straight out of the can with brushes. I took my sheet metals to a local bump shop and they blasted, primed, and sprayed all the MED GREY and used thinner. For hat rims and wheel nuts I use the Case/IH Silver Argent wheel paint. For throttle and plate, gas tank, and acorn nut and washer I use Eastwood Silver Cad. Some metallic and/or aluminum shades for these parts but it will dull and rub off in two years.

I sure agree with you. Many years ago I stopped by Skip's Tractor in Hamburg, MI and saw his beautifully restored 901. Red was a great shade and I liked it as it was not the putrid original orange red that was
on that series. Asked what it was and it was XO-Rust XO-6 red. since I have used it on some 8N's and it is a very close match to the original 8N-001 series red. It has stood up extremely well. A couple of
months ago I went to Tru-Value to pick up a gallon for my 960 and some implements. They no longer carried it. Went on line and no dice either. Today I checked on line and it is listed on some paint sites.
Don't know why I could not get it then, used for years and hoped to keep on.
