Ford 8N Wrenches

I saw an ad today that was advertising a wrench for sale that was one of the 7 original wrenchs that came in the tool box on a Ford 8N. Is that true that there was 7 wrenches? Are they somewhat available out there? Does anyone know what they all are? This one for sale was a spark plug/ head bolt wrench. Thanks for the help.

The number of tools that came with the tractor was not 7. Actually the numbers went down over the years til eventually only a couple. The confusion arises from a full "Tool Kit" that was an accessory item sold by dealers, it includes the multiple wrenches, pliers, screwdriver in a vinyl pouch. It was a nice accessory but never came with the tractor. The tractor came with nothing in the tool box but its accompanying delivery kit did contain some tools along with included essentials.

Jeff---they are readily available. There is a complete set for sale now on EBAY.

There is another Tim that frequents this site that should be able to fix you up with a set that he will guarantee correct for the year tractor you own. Maybe he will see your post.

Most consider a "complete" set to consist of:
1 spark plug wrench
2 open end wrenches
1 monkee wrench
1 screwdriver
1 pliers
1 plow wrench

This is the tool kit that came with the N-series tractors. All tools had the Ford
logo (or FoMoCo after 1950) except for the pliers and screwdriver
which had no markings. For detailed information on the tools see
Harry Kidd's webpage

Does the top wrench double as a gas guage? if so, anybody know the measurements to make one from a paint stir-stick?

I've heard mixed answers on that as far as it "intentionaly" made for that purpose. I use mine for that all the time. No idea of gallons but I kinda know how long I can run on a couple inches!
There was a post some time back where someone had done the test for the paint stick but I don't recall the results.

Here are the measurements to make a paint stick gas gauge..Some owners have used velcrow and magnets glued to the stick to hold it on their tractors.

Measurements:
Overall length 10 5/16 inches

From the bottom to top of each mark
1 gal = 1 1/4"
2 gal = 2 1/16"
3 gal = 2 ¾"
4 gal = 3 15/32"
5 gal = 4 3/16"
6 gal = 4 7/8"
7 gal = 5 9/16"
8 gal = 6 ¼"
9 gal = 7 3/16"
10 gal = 8 1/16"

It is most incorrect to say the pictured tools came with all N tractors. They most certainly did not. Those tools with a vinyl pouch were an accessory item stocked by many Ford Tractor dealers. All N tractors came with a delivery kit that included some tools. The number of included tools declined thru the production years of the N. No tools came in the tool box unless the dealer removed them from the delivery kit and put them there. And lastly the top wrench is a plow wrench marked in inches and used to measure the draft of the plow furrow. Never intended to use as a gas tank measuring device.

Tim;

You make such an excelent point. Wood is a far superior material for this application.

Ahh, come on guys, take a chance. Columbus did! (And look what happened to the Indians)

On a serious note, isn't the tank made of a metal that is softer & less likely to spark or is that just on later model vehicles?
