Ford 9N Hydraulic Lift problems

I recently rebuilt the entire hydraulic lift assembly on my 1941 9N tractor (including lift cover, pump, valves, piston, all seals, new fluid, the whole ball o' wax). Put it all back together and tested it by lifting a relatively light rear blade - didnt lift it. After a few harsh words, I tried to apply some upward/forward pressure to the yoke (at the end of the spring shaft at back of lift cover) and WOW - it worked ! Why is this happening, what did I do to affect the lift mechanism ? Can anyone tell me how to make the necessary adjustment to correct this problem ?
Note: I did what the FO-4 service manual indicates by threading in the yoke a prescribed amount into the shaft while assuring there is still slight play in the spring, but still no joy.

Any help would sure be appreciated !
