Ford 9n mag

Magnetos will get dirty and rusty after awhile and need to be taken apart and cleaned from stem to stern. Especially the coils metal pieces have to be cleaned real good so that they make good contact when reassembled. Also it might need to be re-magnetized this take a special piece of equipment and will have to go to a shop that has it.
I would start with just a good cleaning and setting the points and see what happens before sending it in.

What kind of magneto do you have on a 9N?

My 9N has a battery and coil. Never seen a mag on one.

But a new coil and condenser would be my first guess.

Dell, has always said check your weaksister ignition
switch, my tractor did the same thing back in the summer replaced switch, now a0.k.

With the distributor on that engine as convenient (NOT!) as it is to get to, the tendency is to run it until it won't run anymore (same way as the prewar flat head V-8s) before pulling the distributor for cleaning, adjusting, or replacing points, condenser, and rotor.

You say weak spark? What color? Yellow could be a bad condenser.

Don't use carbon core plug wires, the ignition system isn't made to overcome their losses, use only copper or steel cored plug wires.

I guess you learn something new everyday. You made me scratch my head.

"Batteries were reserved for the war effort, so the steel wheel tractors came with a magneto ignition system instead of a battery"

The mag actually came out with the 2N in 1942 as a war time tractor with no batery or generator and on steel wheels but could have been put on any of the 9N's or 8N's with front mount distribator as well as on the 2N's. The industrial version of all the engines had only mags as they had no generator or battery and had to be hand cranked.

Some BLEM (NOT me) wrote "8N" on that mag. It should be pretty darned obvious if it will fit a front-mount 8N it will fit the 9N and 2N, as well!
