ford 9n wont move

My son was blading the driveway when the tractor just quit moving. You can hear a slight grinding sound in the rear end ? It is a sherman trans. Any ides where to start?

Tim.........its hard telling. The Sherman Aux tranny is between the engine and the tranny, NOT in the rearend. Howsomevers; the ring on the diffy block (held on by 8-rivets) have been know to sheer its rivets. And surprizingly enuff, you sheer the ring off'n the diffy and guess what??? NO MOVE. Ford/New-Holland sells replacement BOLTS to reinstall the ring on the diffy.

Unfortunately, you will haffta do some major "wrenching" to fixx'um. But it is NOT a bad job. Gitt'chur I&T FO-4 and look'um pictures. ........Dell

Does your pto still turn? If so I think that would rule out clutch or transmission failure. I'm no expert maybe someone who is can confirm.

Could be it stripped the splines in the drive coupling between the transmission and pinion. You can remve one of the side covers and jack up one rear wheel and spin it with the transmission in gear and the tractor NOT running.

First thing I would check is to make the the Sherman isn't between high and low - had mine do that. Grab the lever and make it is all the way forward or back.

if so, you know trans is getting input.

Did it make a pop when it quit?
Was driving a G Allis one time and it popped and quit moving. Took it apart and put a new clutch in and checked everything and it looked alright.
Put it back together and did not move. Took back apart and found nothing wrong and still would not move. Then realized the rivets on the ring gear had sheared. Put bolts in and all was OK. Dell knows what he is talking about.

You are correct. This is the first thing to check.

Could be the intermitate drive shaft. Thats what happened to mine (also with a sherman). To see, remove the inspection plate on the right side below the seat. It will unroll like cardboard in a roll of toilet paper. It is the weak Link in the system.

from there, pull the inspection cover on the rear and look in and see if the pinion coupling tube spins.

if it does, then it's a sheared axle, hub sheared out.. or the rivits onthe ring gear let go.
