Ford NNA, Starter motor arcing

My Jubilee starter mortor is arcing at the cable connection. Had just installed a new drive assembly on the starter.

Was cranking the motor a few times to check it, fuel was off, wasn't trying to start it.

Turned it off to get some help as to why it's arcing.

If you're lucky, the battery cable is loose at the stud. Or corroded. When is the last time you replaced the battery cables?

Wiggle the stud. If you are unlucky, you may have busted it or the insulator. Or striped the threads on the stud.

If that's the problem & you're good w/ a soldering gun, you can get a replacement stud & solder it in place.

You will be assured of success by taking it to the local rebuild shop.

No, the cable is new and it's the heavy 0/4 cable. The stud is clean and tight, did notice a puff of smoke coming from under the stud as if it was coming from inside the motor.

Took the motor off, removed the dust cover on the end of the motor. Brushes all look good and didn't see any burnt marks anywhere.

Gonna look at the stud again for bad or weak solder.

yep.. inuslator may be bad or connector under stud may be broke.

Got the arcing taken care of, rusty lock washer under stud bolt.

Timing is at 31 degrees, rotor pointing at #1 plug but distributor cap is out of alignment with #1 plug.

Hard to explain but #1 wire on distributor cap is pasted #1 plug hole.
In other words, rotor is in between #1 and #2 wires on the dis. cap but pointing at the #1 plug hole.

Looks like if I can rotate the dis. just a little to the right then the #2 wire on the dis. cap will line up perfect with #1 plug hole. I could then changes the wires on the dis. cap making #2 wire my #1 wire and redo the other wires according to the firing order.

Am I thinking right or getting into trouble?

Dizzy = Distributor, and yes, I think he was talking about the tractor.
Meaning, did you have it running before, or did you get it as a non-runner
that you're now working on. That leaves lots of variables.

You can read my older post on my NNA, it will give you more info. and all that I have done thus far.

Tractor had not run for two years, been replaceing just about everything new to date. Once I get the timing fixed I think she will fire up.

its important to know, was the tractor running? , need to line up the timing marks on the engine with number 1 on tdc, then look at the distributor, to see where its pointing, it may be off a tooth, or something,it may even have the wrong cap on it and the notch in the cap is for a different engine, or the timing marks on the cam and crank are off 1 tooth, but if it runs, dont change it, if it wasnt running, more investigation is needed to figure out just what is off
