Ford Tractor Governor

I have a 62 Ford Tractor 851, 172 cid gas engine, and it will surge up and down in any gear under a load. My question is, What purpose does the Governor serve, and can it be connected without causing any harm to anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE GOVERNOR HOOKED UP TO IT!! Without it, you are RACING YOUR ENGINE at enormous speeds!!

The governor regulates the engine speed automatically and maintains engine rpm's under random loads applied to the engine! Sort of like a cruise control on a car!

No WONDER you're having problems with engine surging! Please get yourself an operator's manual before you hurt yourself and/or hurt others with your tractor.

Thank you for your help. I take it, it"s either an adjustment on the carb or linkage, or do I need to replace the governor.

In an older tractor,it's usually an adjustment of linkage to compensate for wear.

Before you go off the deep end adjusting things, put a touch of oil on the pins and ball joints of all the linkages. Then change the engine oil.

You have binding either internally or externally that causes the governer to hunt. Our 851 did that, changed engine oil and it stopped.

Bob get a shop manual for your tractor (FO-20 is the I&T version)and the linkage adjustment will be detailed.This should take care of your problem.The manual can be orderd from this site.

Yeah, you just adjust the worn linkage.

BTW, my post sounds kind of like I was yelling, but no, I just usually highlight important stuff with capitalization.

The carb may need to be cleaned and/or adjusted also.

Thank you all for all the help. It was greatly appreciated. The carb is brand new, so I'm thinking adjusting that and the linkage will do the trick. At least I hope so. P.S. The oil is new also. Thanks again, Bob L.

Sounds like the spring on the throttle linkage needs a good cleaning, the one about 3"s long and 3/4" in diameter, on the end of the linkage.
