Just purchased a old Ford tractor. I believe it
to be a 1948 8N. How can I tell the difference
between this old tractors?
Need help, Roger Perreault

If it has a 3-forward-speed transmission, it's a 9N or 2N. If it has a 4-forward-speed transmission, it's an 8N.

That assumes, of course, that the tractor is "original" which means it hasn't been updated by swapping either engines or rear ends, a rather common practice back in the day.

If you can find and read the serial number on the engine, left side, you can look it up in the archives available through this site, and find the date of manufacture. Again, assuming it's all as-built.

Look on the left side of the block on a 1x4 flattened boss and look for a lightly hand stamped sn.. not a raised casting.. will be up top near the head, and aft of the oil filter.

post the number.. that will date the engine at least.. etc..
