Found out why the 530 was missing

Put a battery in the 530, emptied out the really old fuel and put new filters in and added some injection cleaner and clean fuel and she fired right up. It has been missing and I had suspicion of the cause, turns out I was right. Pulled the valve cover and found 2 bent push rods.

Both on the second from front cylinder. By the time I got to it the front valve was loose, the rear was stuck a bit but loosened up. Anyone have any push rods for a 188 diesel? Also any advice on how to make sure they don't stick again?

I have straightened a few push rods with success but they were not bent as bad as those. You would have to check the metal at the bend for stretching and weakness. To free up the sticky valves, I've used a drill (one that the chuck actually holds) and with the keepers and spring removed, spun them with Liquid Wrench as a cleaner, working them up and down.

Nice catch, could a machine shop , engine shop straight en those .?

Jon, I have done that many times on road service, I have seen many straight but popped out, that is not new but not common on those engines. If they straighten without kinking, I would not be afraid to use reuse them. I chuck them up in a valve grinding machine and straighten them that way.

I just put them in the valve chuck and slide the straight part clear in then slip a small pipe or something over the bent part and start pulling it back straight, as you get it straight then slide more in and just keep working till u get it. If you run the chuck you can see what you need to do.

I've done that MANY times and have tried to explain how I did it, you did a VERY good job explaining!

The hot rod guys build custom length pushrods all the time. I'm sure you have a shop nearby .
