My neihbor managed to run over himself with his massy 165 and he's still alive. The tractor went right over his pelvis and pushed him into freshly plowed ground. The tractor was heading for his house so he gets up and chases it down to stop it. He's real lucky it didn't go over his chest. Of course he was doing something stupid. He was ajusting the clutch with the engine running and in gear.

oh my... i can't even describe how stupid that even sounds. That's 10 times more obvious than starting the tractor in gear.

it's wonderful that he wasn't killed. A distant cousin of ours was jumping a MH 50 and it was in gear. It ran over his back but thankfully the bush-hog he had behind it was out of gear. He recovered, but 15 or so years later he still walks with a limp.

It's amazing how stupid we can be, when we are smart enough to know better. I damn near ran myself over when I put the tractor in low low and let it chug through the gate by itself while I opned it- got caught up when I climbed back into the cockpit.
Maryland or Va- we can be our own worst enemy!

That sounds about as bright as one of our old custom operators who was sharpening the knives on the forage harvester out in front of our barn one day and reached in to touch one to see if it was sharp enough yet... with the harvester running flat out. He was lucky another neighbour helping us haul wagons noticed what he was doing and swatted his hand away HARD before he touched anything.

Yep he admitted that was exactly what he was doing, had no excuse for it.

I really don't think comments like that are necessary. Mike seem to pretty much oon the ball and if nothing else he works on our navy jets. Jack

On the lighter side, back in the late fifties, an uncle of mine and a grand uncle had a bout of practical jokes. At a family get-together my uncle sneaked out to my grand-uncle's prized Ford, laid down in the seat and started it, and drove slowly away using his hand on the pedals and steering by watching the mirror. My grand-uncle looked up and saw his car rolling away with no one in it. "Why, why, that car, that car!" he said, and went running after it, my granddad hard on his heels. When they yanked the door open there was my uncle grinning up at them. --Some time later, my uncle was fishing in the river while my grand uncle worked in the next field. Grand uncle found a hole in the field, parked his old M over it and crawled in the hole under the wheel as if he'd been run over. God knows how long he waited for my uncle to finish fishing and pass by, but when he did, there was my grand uncle agonizing like he was dying under the tractor wheel. It must have been too soon after the car incident for my uncle smelled a rat. He walked up and said, "get out from under there you rascal, you ain't hurt any worse than I am".--Those guys are gone now, but the family remembers them with affection and always laugh about their antics.

When I was a child another kid was going to roll start a SC Case. It was on a steep barn driveway and when the rest of us kids were trying to get more speed out of it, he let dumped the clutch. The problem was he had it in reverse and it actualy bounced and after it bounced it started and proceded backwards with us kids pushing from the rear. To this day I can't figure out how.. except the backlash in the gears. No one got hurt but sure could have. It still sounds stupid even today.
