front wheel base

Why do some tractors have a very narrow front wheel base and some a larger front wheel base? I believe it has something to do with type of crops, but I don't know what type of crops and if there are any other reasons....I have spent numerous summers on the farm and many hunting seasons, but it never dawned on me ask why the two different types. until my hunting buddie posed the question

Has to do with plowing, certain crops, ease of turning at ends of plowed rows, and several other reasons this city boy can't remember at this time!

short awnser the narrow frontend enabled you to drive into you culivator, back in the day befor chemical weed controll the front or mid mounted culivator was essential for weed controll.increased yields from rows under 40" chemical weed supression and the ability to do the job with rear mounted culivators killed the narrow front. if you ck tyou will wind the narrow front mostly died out in the 60's

The main reason was to allow a mounted corn picker or cotton picker to be mounted on tractor. Also it was easier to mount the cultivator, middlebusters or bean pullers but most of these were also compatible w/ the wide front ends.
