What's the deal with fuel in the south east?

I'm hering of big shortages in ga.. and here in fl.. our diesel supplier for the GC i work for just cut us off! We got 250g last week.. and that was by begging. We are having to send our transport rig to a filling station at the interstate just to fuel up himself and the equipment .. not that we are doing much work because the economy sucks soo. bad....

I heard on the news this morning that the shortage here in the southeast is because there is still no power for the houston area refineries. I think it's because the oil companies think we will want fuel bad enough to pay 5 bucks a gallon.

Here in South Georgia its been real tight for the last 10-12 days with gas/desiel supplies with as many as 95% of the stations out at one time and if you were lucky you could still find some with effort. The prices went sky high, well over $5 until the Governor got a fraud task force in motion and then the prices fell overnight to @ 3.70. (greed my friends). Supplies are still tight with probably 50% now having fuel. Just make sure to not let tank get below 1/2 and you'll be okay. That is what we all learned real fast,a lot of panic attacks were floating around and autos on the side of the road out of gas.

Those people that gouge should have to forfeit all their assets if proven guilty.. that'd be a good penalty.. I bet it would really cut down on the practice.. all or nuttin'...

are all running again. We have no shortage of gas here in Central Texas- in fact the price is falling. It's down to $3.42 and I saw on a gun board that I visit that it's $3.15 in Joplin, MO. I think the reason for the shortage in the Southeast is that the "pipeline" from the refineries ran dry during Ike and it hasn't replenished yet.

Its been crazy here in western NC since just before Ike hit Texas. Filled up my truck at $3.59 the Tuesday before Ike. By Friday that week some stations were out and those that had gas were charging $4.50 & up. The governor and attorney general made anouncements about seriously investigating price gougers and the prices came back down but availability has been hit and miss. Most stations have $30 - $50 limits when they have gas.

While many refineries in the Houston area were shut down during the storm I think all are back up and running now.
Colonial pipeline also shut down during the storm. In fact they had damage to some of their pumping stations. This pipeline runs from Houston up threw Atlanta and on to the northeast. It has several spurs on it that goes to places like Fla.
While they are up and running I do not know it is 100% yet.

Now if you take the facts above and consider every place along the pipeline is still using fuel at a normal rate you can see that every tank along the pipeline was empty or very close to it before new supplies were sent up. It takes a long while to catch up when you get behind. Especially when you consider they work on a just in time business. Pumping capacity is very close to use.
Unlike another business that can bring in outside help to catch up they are stuck with their pumping capacity and must try to catch up.

Then we take it one step more.
This pipeline serves the southeast and northeast. Southeast has been having shortages but the northeast has plenty of fuel.
Now read that last paragraph again and draw your own conclusion.

I live north of Atlanta about 40 miles. We left Thursday for a week-end of fishing in Steinhatchee,Fla. No gas available in our town, found some in Tifton, Ga, $3.82 gallon only had regular. On to fish. Came home today, gassed up not far from our fishing spot. Out of all but regular at $3.86 a gallon. Found some in Macon, about half the stations seemed out as they had removed the prices from their signs. From macon north all the way home, very, very scarce.A lone Q T station closer to home had about 20 cars lined up to gas up.That was the only station out of all we passed that was not totally out.Georgia gets gas from a pipeline out of Texas, the news says the refinery will be up and running in 2 weeks and another week to start delivery. It blows.
North of us upto and including much of Tennessee is not doing any better.

In wisconsin, if a gas station changes price more than 1 time in 24 hours they can get slammed. The penalty is some crazy high fine like 10,000 per occurance. Ouch.

IMO, like the economic fiasco, there's a lot of blame to go around, including the media. Lately, I noticed the gas mileage I've always got has dropped 2-3 mpg. I suspect ethanol to be the reason. Ever notice the price of diesel as being higher than gas? before Katrina and all the media blathering about fuel shortages because of it, it was always cheaper. When it was cheaper, more people were buying diesels because of the better fuel economy. Since Katrina, it went up and stayed up. I think they they raised the price of diesel above gas because they could, and knew they were missing out on making a ton of money because people were trading in their gas vehicles for the better mileage of diesels.

Great point John,we have e-mailed someone who works for exxon and asked that question.(the northeast/southeast thingy) Will pass along his reply when received.

my silverado dropped 2-3 miles when I could no longer get the old reg gas. they are all this corn oil gas now. lotsa good it does to cut back 10% on gas but use 15% more for the same miles driven. Dumb politicians are killen us all. Dale in VA.

3.23/gallon today in SE Iowa. Completely filled up the tank for a change.

Bottom line is that this county needs a couple more refineries. During the 80's the big oil companies bought up the little oil companies and consolidated resources and closed refineries to control cost as at the time capacity far exceeded demand.

The name for people who fill up their vehicles AND a couple of gas cans around here is Gashole. Heard that at the store today.
