Fuel Problems

I have a 1965 MF 165 that keeps losing prime, sometimes it works for hours on end, then sometimes it won"t go 10 feet. I have replaced almost all the lines, all the filters are new. Am I missing something? Thank you in advance for any help.

Check the fuel pump. If the baffle has a small tear in it, it will allow fuel to go back down through the lines.

I'm not familiar with this tractor. My tractor has a lift pump and an injection pump. When my lift pump went bad the tractor would never hold prime.

First possibility is the petcock and/or screen at the bottom of the fuel tank being stopped up. Next is the lift pump (also called primary pump) It can go bad, causing several problems. It can leak fuel externally, it can leak fuel into the crankcase, or it can simply quit pumping fuel and suck air around the outside of the diaphram. It"s not uncommon to have a lift pump work sometimes and not work others. Next would be a clogged filter or fuel line. Then there"s a screen where the fuel enters the injector pump. When it plugs, fuel won"t go into the pump. Finally, a bad injector pump.

I"ve had personal experience with the lift pump failing. It did exactly as you described.

If the diapham is tore that can and most likely the problem ,also wnnt to the tank valve to make sure nothing growing or stopping it up that will cause a vaccum when trying to pump fuel,if there is can cause the problem again

Thank you everyone for the help, after lenghthy time spent tearing everything down and checking every nook and cranny I feel somewhat like an idiot, the line that comes from the tank to the first sediment bowl has a gasket in there that had rotted and plugged the elbow.....makes me feel kinda dumb, but at least it was cheap. thanks again for all the help, its much appreciated.

Thank you everyone for your help, I feel kinda stupid as I found out that a gasket folded in the line and restricted the fuel flow.
