Fuel pump on cat 3116

My truck stopped and i can't get any fuel pumped up to the filter it appears that the pump is under the valve cover. Is this correct and do i have to go to cat to get one. My 94 truck has steel lines and both tanks have fuel in them. I get no air or fuel at the filter.
 
Larry - On the 3116 Mechanical (9GK serial number prefix) the fuel transfer pump is part of the governor group (mounted high on the front driver-side of the engine). You should be able to verify if this pump is working with our removing the valve cover.
 
Larry, I retired from a large leasing co. We had some problems with the pick up tube breaking from viberation. If yours is equipped that way. They would snap off just below the fitting where they screw in the top of tank. Good luck Jim
 
It looks like ser prefix is 1gd, it looks like the lines go into the head. Checking the tank line is a good idea, i would think it should pump air if broke. I am not getting anything from the line.
 
Larry - Not sure that it matters, but I show (for engine serial numbers):

Its been a long time, but based on the drawings, it looks like the transfer pump is a piston pump, driven off of the governor drive. It will be found between the back of the front cover and the front of the governor. Fuel should flow into the pump through a 90 degree elbow that is attached to the top of the housing with 3 bolts. The piston pump is directly below this elbow. There is a check valve in the elbow that you might want to inspect. Good luck, Steve
 
This system differant than anything i have worked on. Got a friend over and it looks like the selonoid is working and the line into the tank is ok. I need to find out if this pump is really turning. Thanks for the help.
 
There is nothing under the valve cover you should be concerned with unless the rack is not moving. The tranfer pump is built into the top of the govenor housing at the front. You say you are not getting air or fuel? How are you checking this? If the filters are empty then take them off and fill with clean fuel. Be careful to keep it clean! put them on. If it has a hand primer start pumping. Otherwise start cracking lines with some air pressure on the fuel tank until you get fuel out the return line heading to the tank. If you can't get fuel to first filter then chances are your line coming out of the tank is plugged or sucking air. Blow air back down the line to the tank if it is ok it will gurgle because it is submerged and not plugged. It may take a sniff of ether to get it to fire if the injectors ran dry becuase it takes a strong starter to turn it fast enough to get the air pushed out of them. Very seldom did that style transfer pump fail. Some did but not common. Did it just die suddenly or did it sputter and run rough and take a bit to die. Some things to try and think about. The more details you can provide to us the better.
 
I have been working on diesels for 35 years,but not one with this kind of system. There is no hand primer and no seperate primary pump. Allso there is no real injector pump and the injectors are under the valve cover.There is no return line to the tank. The fuel filter is full, but no fuel flows. When you pull the truck with the engine turning at 1500 i get no smoke or fuel flow.All the books i have show older systems.
