Fuel tank has a hole

The fuel tank on my chipper has a rustrd out spot. Is fiber glass cloth a good sealer, If I put a couple coats on the bad spot? Stan

no. it is affected by the fuel. If it is just a pinhole, a course sheet metal pan head screw with a neoprene oring or gasket will stop it quick. If an area is thin, the best is to clean it dry it and solder over the area with acid core solder then clean again. Use a large electric iron, not a torch unless it has been boiled out to rid it of trapped fumes and vapors. JimN

napa used to sell a fiberglass/resin type patch kit just for gas tanks.

I was fortunate enough to find several large copper soldering irons at flea markets or antique shops over the years. One of the perks of traveling three or four states. I try to visit the junkiest ones. best deals there. These soldering irons let you transfer the heat to a fuel tank without having an open flame.

It usually works for me. There is a patch especially made for gasoline. (NAPA) Also, I believe that JB Weld applied with some glass material will do OK. I have used a product called Marine-Tex similar to JB Weld to repair gaas tanks in boats and small machinery(currently have a weed whacker with patched gas tank for last 6 years done with Marine-Tex which you can get at any boat store.

Fiberglass resin isn"t a good patch anymore if you use any type of ethanol gas. We had a lot of problems with ethanol gas in fiberglass tanks and it produced some gummy stuff that ruined a lot of small boat engines. If the tank has a rusted spot, check out the rest of the tank because you may have more holes starting (in that case, get another tank). You could do as the other poster said (screw in pan head sheet metal screw with gasket) and then cover the patch with a fiberglass cloth, JB weld, LPS Strong steel stick, etc. Just be sure to apply to a clean dry surface.
