G questions

Might be a little long winded, but I have a couple issues with rebuilding a 51'G. It was disassembled when I got it. The radiator must be the siphon type. Bottom has angled pipe out the middle. There is a water pump which apparently mounts on the fan bearing support. A couple of 90 degree elbows from 3" to 1 1/2" direct the water up through the pump and back into the main pipe. Is this an after market add on ? None of the manuals I have show this type of setup. If anyone knows of this pump, how in the he-- do you get it apart to change the bearings?
Second, there are two rocker arm assemblies. One has a keyway for the cap which covers the exhaust valves. I assume the purpose of this is to keep the cap from rotating for some reason. The other does not. I assume the the preferred one to use would be the keyed one? The caps have two holes in them. One larger than the other. I assume there is some type of pin supposed to be sticking through the cap to ride in the keyway. These are also missing. What do they look like? Must press in like a rivet.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hey 1000yds. I got a '51 G. It doesn't have a water pump. I don't think any of them came from the factory with a water pump. Someone must have done some serious work with your G to require a pump. My books are all out in the shop and I'll look up the info to your second question, but what you're saying sounds right. The pins and keys are there so you won't get the caps mixed up. rw

Some of the very late G's had water pumps.. they were basically a 70 lower tank.. Some G's were upgraded to a water pump.. especially when the M&W pistons were added..
I can't remember two different types of rocker assemblies..

Sorry.. the factory water pump mounted to the lower tank... Your setup sounds like some aftermarket setup...

just a little information, the waterpump you are talking about is not OE...the lower tank one was OE in the last year or so of the Gs. Gs that were converted to gas pistons and cold manifold would often get a h2o pump installed at the dealer...sometimes the OE style or more often the aftermarket you are refering too. I think dealers could get the pump you have and install it at less expense than disassemblying (sp sorry)the radiator etc. Sorry without having it under my nose at the moment i can't advise you on taking it apart. I'm fairly confident you can replace the bearings and packings in it.

I believe what you have is a aftermarket water pump. I don't know what brand they are but the way you describe it I know what you are talking about and have seen this set up before, but I never had one apart. Factory G pumps came out in later 1952 at s/n 60700 and are mounted at the lower radiator tank. The rocker arm deal is as you said pins in the keyways. Sounds like your on the right track there. The other hole I beleive is an oil hole. With out going to the barn and looking up these parts at 15 degrees tonight I think you should fix the pins. Good luck.

What you have is refered to as a Johnson brand waterpump. They were common in this area back then. You'll probably have to remove the fan shaft support from the tractor to get the pulley off the pump and tear it down. I've got one out in the shed I removed from my 49 G because it was leaking a few years back.
