G705 and 800HD

I'm starting to pick up parts to build my G705 I want to put an hd 800 in what do i need to be looking out for in the clutch area. I plan on keeping the hand clutch can they be beefed up, who would have parts. Oh I'm also looking for a 800 motor too at least complete. Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks

If your 705 had a diesel then you just use your diesel flywheel on your 800 and it will bolt right up I would put new clutch plates in and have the clutch drive plates re surfaced and adjust it up kinda tight and you shouldn't have any trouble. Good luck

That's fine it will still work you just need to find a diesel flywheel. Welters should have one or atleast they did last month when I went up there, they also carry the clutch plates.

Why is it better to turn the 800 flywheel to fit then use an 705 flywheel. How much has to be take off there to make it fit.

Not sure how much needs to be machined off but if the 800 you find is a one pice rear seal or circle seal then you will have to machine the power unit flywheel. I do know of about 10 tractors running the diesel flywheel on 800's with no problems. But either way will be fine

i am going to put a hd 800 in my gvi one day and i got a diesel flywheel for it. i was told by a very good and long time moline engine builder that this was the way to go and dont use the 800 flywheel.

You should be albe to get the 800 flywheel machined for around $100 (I can get it done for less than that). You don't have to drive to pick up a new flywheel or pay for shipping.
The 800 starter will work.

Yes, a diesel flywheel will work, but maybe there are other options.

The tractor clutch drive ring will not bolt to the HD800 power unit flywheel. The Power units run a larger clutch and the bolt pattern is much bigger.

As you can see below, you have a couple of choices:

1) Buy a gvi or g705 diesel flywheel. This will be a bolt in job and will not require any special or machined parts. This will ONLY work with the older, more common 2 piece seal HD800, as the crank flange has a different bolt pattern on the later 1 piece seal HD800

2) Have your HD800 flywheel turned down to fit the bell housing. This can be cheaper, but you may have to have the flywheel drilled for the cluch ring gear from the tractor. This may be the only option if you get a later model HD800 with a 1 piece rear seal.

The power unit starter will work with either option.

The LP tractor flywheel will not work in any case, due to the starter ring gear location.

There is no need to "beef up" the factory clutch, just make sure it has new fiber disks and all the pieces are true and without wear. It will hold alot of horsepower.

As you can see either one will work effectively, you just need to decide if you want to have one machined or buy a diesel flywheel. I personally like the diesel flywheel better because you can just put the tractor together and know it will work. With the machining you take the chance of it not fitting the first time or the machinest ruining your flywheel in some way.
