Gaining HP - 2N

I read somewhere, either here or N Tractor, I think, that replacing the 2N head with an 8N head adds a few HP. My 46 2N has a 8N head. N-Tractor also sells dual exhaust and claims to add a few HP. Can anyone confirm or debunk this?

The 8N heads are reported to have a higher compression ratio.
Well...I should refine that...the 8N's are supposed to have a higher
ratio...I have no first hand knowledge as to if' it's the deck height,
heads, pistons or a combo that does it. Most logically, it would be
the head.

Trying to start an argument?

LOL!!!!!

Dave:

Increasing the compression ratio will increase torque and HP but save your money regarding the dual exhaust.

I still think if you are looking for more hp the best way is to sell your tractor and buy a newer one. Move up to a 600 or 601. I would skip the NAA/Jubes. 600/601 will not only get you 40% more hp but live hydraulics, hydraulic remote capabilities, better brakes, better rear axles, more tranny options and possibly power steering and live pto to boot. And from a 2N you would also get a sure nuff real mccoy draw bar and position control.

Dave......the original 1939 N-Compression was 6.0:1 and 23hp, Later upped to 6.2:1 CR. 8N's have 6.5:1 and 26hp per Nebraska Univ Ag tests. The external_link "dual exhaust" adds maybe 4hp and lotta eyecandy.

You want more hp? Consider using a Chevy BIG BLOCK smogpump as a belt driven suppercharger with a NAA carb to gitt the mouth facing the 'charger. Brackets are yer design. You doubt? Google "Dirt Cheap Suppercharger" by Steven A Richmond. Flatheads really take well to suppercharging .......Dell

Yep, that'd be the most logical way to go, like Ultradog says. I seriously doubt that changing the head or exhaust system will make a noticeable difference. Some claim it has but I think that's more a sound and perception thing. Of course you could always look for a Funk setup and go with a V8..........yeeehaaa!!

What I want is a 961 Ford to compliment my 46 2N, but that's down the road at least 2 years. I just brought this up for disussion and apparently to start an argument.

Hey Dave;
Since I am a mis-placed MULE, from MO., I got two cents ta give ya.
First as you say you already have an 8N head, on yer 2N, (as do I), That ??? is Null and Voided.
Secondly.....JMHO....The ?? about the duel exhuast, May or may not give you the appretiated amount of gain in HP, that others have told you about.!!!!!!!!!!!
My take on this is......Tune the orig. configuration of the 2N up, IE; Timing, points, plugs, carb, and fuel....You should be good to go for power to do what that 2N is made to do. ......JMO
SAVE yer $$$$'s for more important things, like parts, fuel, and tires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The way things are going....you will need the extra bucks!!!!!!!
If ya really want more HP.....buy a bigger tractor......LOL

I just read yesterday on this site, somewhere ?, that changing from points to an electronic ign increases (8n) h/p...... ? Cost of kit around $90 bucks if i remember correctly, but don"t have any idea how much actual h/p increase as a result, if any.

An electronic ignition will not increase the horsepower of an engine relative to a correctly tuned convential ignition sytem.

What it will do is provide optimum ignition performance without replacing/adjusting points or replacing condensors , etc.

I have a Pertonix Ignitor I on my TO-30 and I get reliable starts ain all weather conditions without the necessity of futzing around with points and condensors, etc. My tractor is a working machine on our ranch and when i need it I want it to start. I'm too busy and don't need to preserve the old skills of the setting points, which I had done for more years than I care to admit. For $90, I save a lot of my valauable tme doing things to improve the ranch rather than keeping the tractor running well.

Rebuild the motor and do some of the flat head hot rodder tricks to it.

Remove the sleeves and run mercury pistons.
Do some porting.
Good valve job
Relieve the block

Find a cam grinder and have them do a better cam with more lift and be better for the rpm range you run it in.
