I realize this discussion group is probably geared more towards "real" tractors, but...
My kids are in 4H, and we're at a lot of local fairs. My 13 year old son has taken a serious interest in the garden tractor pulls he's seen at many of the fairs.
I have a little john deer 13hp lawn tractor in the yard that he's been tinkering with and I know what he has in mind. But I really think that thing's just going to frustrate him.
I hear that the old cub cadets are a better way to go, but I'm not sure why that is, or which models are better.
I'm considering buying something for him, nothing crazy, something cheap that he can fix up. But every time I search, I come up with so many different model numbers. There seems to be an endless number of models.
I assume higher horsepower is probably the first thing I should look for?
Are there any other features I should be looking for? Is there a particular model that is better than others?
Are there other brands that are equally good for pulling?
I'm a farmall guy, he'd probably think it's neat to have an international harvester of his own... (but of course, he might like something different for the same reason)
Any advice I could get would be greatly appreciated.
Cost is a big factor. I'm hoping to find something under 500, and the more "under" the better. (I expect to help him fix whatever it needs) Thanks
