Gas powered post hole auger

If you want to save some money rent one for just one hour instead of all day, that way after the first hole you will still have time to get it back to the rental store.

I bought an Earthquake Power drill over 20 years ago and its still going strong. I was going to rent one but buying one was cheaper because I was fencing about 5 acres. One man operation and its not much heavier than a good size weed whacker. Came with a 6 inch auger that was a little over 3 feet long. It had enough torque to dig the holes but not so much o break your arms. I paid a little over $100 back then, dont know what they cost now or the current quality but I love mine. Three fence rows, five decks and it makes planting trees and bushes a breeze.

Drilled probably 1000s of holes with one. Would not hesitate to get another one. Put fence in places you could not get tractor to. Also at times for just a few holes you will be done before hitching one to tractor. You rent one and the cutters are worn and wont drill.

I've rented a Little Beaver auger a couple of times, and I highly recommend it. One person can easily operate it, due to its unique design: The auger head is separate from the motor, which sits on the ground in a cart. The auger head is driven through a flexible driveshaft, while a solid torque bar connects the auger head to the motor so the torque is tranferred to the cart.
Little Beaver earth augers

Thanks for the replies. Going to haul the tractor . Theres a few gas augers Ive looked at but they are all 8 inch augers. I need ten for railroad ties so that made the decision.

Railroad ties for fence post??

Hope you are making plans to replace them in about 3 to 5 years. Railroad ties do not last long when they have direct contact to the ground.

I totally agree. Pipeline folks laid a new pipeline across my property. The gates and fence restoration was done with just such a machine. One of the things I really like about it, besides running a 4' or so auger is that its out front of you where you can see what you are doing.

aybe they were better long ago, as I still have such corner posts that were installed over 40 years ago. Same as some of cut off electric poles.

Good grief. Did not realize how soft the world has gone. Use the hand digger for year. Thought nothing of digging 30 inch holes. Even have a punch bar my granddad used for those hard places and to break rocks when we found them. Bar is 1 1/2 inch octagonal about 8 feet long. Formed to a punch on one end and flattened out to a 3 inch web on other end. Even today for the odd post hole that needs to be dug i will grab the hand diggers. But i am only 66.

I used to like digging holes by hand but when Ive got a
lot to do besides dig holes I think Ill use the tractor
over my back . The only one and two man augers I
could find only had an 8 inch auger so why buy
something that wont do the job . Ive loaded 9 foot
railroad ties by hand by myself too and I dont need to
do that anymore either
