guys,I have gas a tank with old crud in it,it looks like dried gas, rust, dirt, and who knows what else.I was told to put acid in it,but I'm not sure. The tractor is a '55 ford 640.The tank will be taken off for cleaning, repairs, etc.what is the best way to clean it,I ask because you guys have experience in matters such as this, thanks,cw

some radiator shops will dip them.. baring that I'd fill it with some diesel and agitate... some have reported using a pressure hose in them.. or adding chain or a handfull of nuts... your call on that one.

after getting the gunk out and washing, you might try some phosphoric acid on it to eat the rust... many forms of it out there sold as iron stain removers.. or rust eaters.. naval jelly.. concrete cleaner/etcher.. etc..

If the tank looks pretty good on the out side maratic acid will do the trick but if it is bad both in and out it may open up a pin hole or 2. You could also get a can of carb cleaner as in gal. one and pour it in and let it soak for 24 hours or so then drain and flush with water. I would filter the carb cleaner so you could use it to clean carbs later

I had a motorcycle once that sat for about a year while I was overseas. When I got home I wanted to get it running again and knew the gas tank was cruddy and had surface rust in it. I used about 50% Muratic acid and water, let it sit for about 10 minutes then rinsed it out. The inside of the tank looked new.

Old gas was one of my biggest problems with my antique cars and tractors. I have had 4 gas tanks cleaned and a system called Red Out added to seal the tank's. A friend owns Four Seasons Radiator in Madison Heights, Mi. Ray the owner tells me he has never had one returned. They do many motorcyles, antique cars and tractors which sit much of the time. I now drain the old gas from my cars, trucks and tractors each spring and burn up the old gas in my modern cars. Hope this helps. Don (MI)

i have used muratic acid to much success but leaves tank with new metal that must be covered. i use a product called kbs tank sealer and liner works very well.

Thanks for all the advice, gonna try them all, starting with the muratic acid first.By the way 'OLD' I would definitely buy your book, could I have it autographed ? some great stories, thanks alot,c.w.sellers
