I used nuts and bolts in dry tank and mounted tank to tire on running tractor. got a lot out then used NAPA kit to line it with. So far so good. about 6 months ago!

I used nuts and bolts on one--attached to rear tire on my "spare" tractor and drove around with it dry to start and blew out with air. made a hell of a noise, after completing my bush hogging/tank cleaning. I put it in the electrolysis tank with the electrode inside the tank wrapped in one of my wifes plastic bath scrunchie doodads to keep it from shorting out--finished with red kote. that worked well for me--the fellow I sold it to lives down the road and no problems in the last two years since he bought it.

Put chain and old nuts in it and covered the openings. Than straped it to the rear wheel of a jacked up tractor for 2 hours and then took chain & nuts out. That took all the scale out. Than soaked it for four days with Evapo-rust. Drained that out and put a soapy boiling water for an hour ,drained and rinsed tank till water is clear. Then blow warm air into tank to get it dry. Than coat it with Red Kote. Evapo-Rust was filtered and is reuseable. What you don't use of the Red Kote can be used again. I did the same thing to a tank 30years ago (but with different products) it still good today.

I faced this same choice a year or two ago in my 8N.

The old tank started leaking slowly and when I pulled it and cleaned it up I found many pinholes forming. I ended up getting a new tank as opposed to lining it because when the liner fails (and it will eventually) it can clog up the carb and filters and cause other problems that can take time and money to fix. Sure you would save money now by lining the tank, but how much to replace the gummed up screens and rebuild the carb later? ...not to mention the down time when that happens, usually at the worst possible time according to Murphy's Law.

That's why I ended up getting a new tank as Bruce (VA) suggests and I am glad I did.

My experience went something like this: Removed tank, Put about 3X 1 quart jar full of fine gravel in tank. Shook bejeebers out of tank exposing more holes than a truck load of Swiss cheese. Threw tank away and replaced with new one. That's my method tried and tested. It works!

I did the one on my JD that I had previously used a 'coating' in. Thing sat for about 8 yrs. and when I got to the point of "let's run 'er", the sediment bowl filled it self instantly with the 'coating'. Removed tank, hosed the bejillywillikers out of it with the pressure washer, then counted (don't remember the number now) some 3/4- gravel chunks and shook the gollygoshhecks out of the unit over 3 days ( had my son home at that time-big strong lad), flushed it again (after removing the previously counted rocks), re-installed, flushed a couple of gallons of gas (taken at the sed. bowl) and it has be O.K. since. Helps that now 'Ole John' resides inside (I guess). HTH

Gas Tank Liner

Just proves he did not prep the tank right... Liner like paint done right will not peel off...

I have done at least 20 tanks thru the years and never had a issue,,, I go the extra mile,,, with all that work a new tank does look inviting

Gas Tank Liner

will say--the 150 I spent on the N tank-bought from this site was the best 150 I ever spent on the tractor. tank I did the nut and bolt treatment on was a MF 135 tank would have cost 400 bucks--kid number two was on the way, hence the reason to get it running and sold. 150-165-money well spent.
