gb engine in uts

Posted back on the third about putting 56 gb engine in a 48 uts, I got them apart and tried the u flywheel and starter on the 403 engine. starter is about 1/4 inch away from ring gear due to fly wheel is smaller in diamater. 403 flywheel is to big to go into u bellhousing. ring gears will not swap. Any suggestions?

Just grind out the bell housing and run the GB ring gear and starter. Sometimes the GB flywheel will hit the back of the clutch housing you can either turn it down in a lathe or get a later U flywheel from a 12 volt tractor and the GB ring gear will interchange with it. The 6 volt u flywheel will not interchange.

I used a flywheel from a 403 power unit. I still had to grind the transmission case to fit the starter in, but the flywheel fit in just fine.

Seems like there were some issues with the pilot bearing, but I think I didn't have the correct original pilot bearing to start with.

Another option is to build the G 403 on the U 283 crankcase and use the 283 flywheel and starter.

I better add that there are other issues:

Original exhaust manifold won't quite come through hole in U hood. I had to saw one of the 'loops' off the baffle-the part that goes down into the manifold that the exhaust pipe slides on. The side panel still bowed a bit around the manifold.
(If you use a 5 star or M5 manifold, it avoids this problem. BUT you have to make a longer governor link to operate the carburetor.)

upper water manifold is 2" higher than radiator outlet. Maybe even higher than that if you use the G parts, I think. I used a radiator inlet from a diesel and the U return water manifold. (The UTS I converted happened to be a diesel.) That combination. only had 1/2" or so of misalignment.

The regular temperature gauge sensor positon won't fit under the hood. The U manifold I used had an extra pipe plug on one side, so I installed it there.

If you are going to really work it, the U radiator won't get the job done. At least mine didn't. Its just not big enough. I had mine re-cored with an extra-thick core, but its still marginal.
