On the older equipment we have, we have always used straight 90 wt gear oil in the transmissions and gearboxes. Our supplier is telling me now that he is no longer able to obtain it, but can get 80w-90 in the GL-5 variety. Is this safe to use in transmissions such as the Farmall Super A's through the 140's along with auger / bushog gearboxes ?

I use that of the new universal type trans/hyd oil in mine

SAE 40 or 50 engine oil will be similar in viscosity (different viscosity scales) and has EP additives. Jim

Most definitely , it’s the replacement oil to that old stuff. That’s what it’s for.

80w90 is used in my Farmalls.

GL-1 oil (recommended) is tough to find. I did find an oil company in Texas that still makes it but that was a few years ago.
Edit: I see now that some of the GL-5 oils are yellow metal safe.

Usually in the seat. You know I’m talking about - Bronze gears and bushings. Both are basically copper.

I told you the brASS is in the seat and the bronze is in the transmission.

I certainly would if daily drivers called for GL I 2 3 or 4. If GL5 is called for use GL5 .

I thought it was only in winter time when it got to -40 that’s what would freeze the balls of a brass monkey . It’s Ihc, no brass in these transmissions.

We use the 80-90 or if synthetic in truck rearends then a 75-90 and for the transmission just a 50 wt oil in there. If you use a heavier oil it gets stiff to shift in cold weather until it warms up some. Ran over a million miles on it with no problems and still going. It works less but harder now on the dump trailer pulling more weight.

I also use 85w140. The thicker oil helps the transmission slow down when shifting out of neutral so it doesn't grind

Usually in the reverse idlers.
