Gear Reduction Starter

Hey everyone, I was wanting to know what everyone is doing for a late model JD A gear reduction starter. It has the starter mounted underneath, and I was curious to wether or not a gear reduction could be mounted underneath. The stock starter I have will barely start it, but I am on my second broken nose cone, and I am in need of an upgrade. Pictures would be appreciated!

Broken nose cone is the clue. The initial timing during cranking is way over advanced. Re-time for spark at TDC while cranking.

One thing I failed to mention is that this tractor is very high compression and it has a 9.25in stroke. I had the tractor where it would start, but since it is taking so much to get it cranking I think that is where the nose cone is failing.

I've got an "A" with cu in in the mid 600's that still uses the stock starter. 2 batterys, large cables, and open the petcocks. I've never had a problem with breaking the nosecone. B&D has it right--check the timing. They break because it fires too early and kicks back. I also would like a gear reduction starter, but have never found one that will fit. Mike

We hear you fellows talk about cornbread etc but we never see the stuff in this part of the country. Is it a main staple, a side dish, bread that is just bread but made from corn instead of wheat of what?

I knew a fellow puller that died from open petcocks it's fuel rich air that it discharges and,if it ignites like it did in the situation I know of, it may be deadly . get a starter that doesn't require open petcocks.

Where I grew up in the Mid-South, cornbread was a staple bread eaten at dinner and supper. Most made a fresh pan or two every day. I really like fresh hot cornbread with butter. Good with fried potatoes, green beans or peas, sliced tomatoes, squash, etc. etc.
Mom always used self-rising corn meal mix, an egg, salt, milk, and a touch of Wesson oil to create the batter.
Batter was then poured into a hot oiled cast iron skillet and cooked in the oven until just starting to brown on top. The bottom crust would be exceptionally good. However, a covered dutch oven type pan could also be used, even over a campfire.

Wife and me raised 5 kids on corn bread, blackeyed peas and deer meat, hard to beat, corn bread and butter milk mighty good too.

Now I know why I never go north of the Mason Dixon Line. I'd starve to death. I eat corn bread twice a week. Brown beans and corn bread, pickled beets, fried taders and onions and butter milk to drink and a couple pieces of crispy fried hog jowl. Peach cobbler and ice cream for desert.Man I'm getting hungry and I just ate.

it's good with chili or butter and honey. I heard that at night during the civil war the yanks would ask the Reb's for cornbread. yeeehaw

Yes hot corn bread is just like cake, most restaurants here(southern Illinois) always have it as a option to bread or rolls. Vic

Ya could say its a staple here in Okla. We just had wild onions and eggs, soft fried taters, and cornbread for supper last nite.. Make ya smack them lips...

No offense, I love cornbread, but good gosh some of this other stuff mentioned to eat? whew lordy. Pizza and beer for me!

None,no heart trouble,no blood pressure problems,no diabetes. 62 years old and don't even take an asprin.I work to match what I eat. 10 to 12 hours a day of physical labor. Very little TV and No couch time. Sleep 8 hours a day and back at it again.Works for me.
