Gear shift lever

My gear shift lever is very loose. It flops around in all the gears, but it appears to drop down in third gear and rattles on one of the gears in the transmission. Is there an easy way to fix this problem? Thanks Dennis This is a 1941 9 N ford

Dennis,a pin that goes through the shifter and rides in a slot under the boot, has worn into or has fallen out.Remove the boot and have a look see.

Thanks for the info. There is still a pin there but it does look worn. It also looks like The trans cover is worn where the pin rides. Can the pin be changed? Thanks. Dennis

The pin sure can be changed. If I remember correctly, it is tapered, so if it doesn't want to come out in one direction, try the other. I also recall it cost around $3.50

You mentioned that the trans cover may be worn...does it look worn or broken? Only reason I ask : mine was busted and was really sloppy.

If replacing the pin does not help, you will have to remove the cover and see if the shift lever or the slots it moves in are worn out.

My slots in the tramission cover was worn so bad I was able to get into two gears at the same time. This broke 3 gears and caused a lot of work. Check them to be sure.

When I try to put the tractor in gear you hear the teeth grindng prior to engaging. Handle is also loose but does not come out of gear.

No
The gear shifter socket is worn, check my site on how I rebuilt mine. You tranny cover may be aluminum and if you don't care could replace it with a newer cast iron one.
Johns old iron
