does anyone know if a genII tractor say 4430,4630,4640 be made in to a fender tractor and which models (if any) were avaibale with a narrow front?
thanks! Cort

all were made with fender decks the early 4030,4230,and 4430 were available with a "convertable" front end, which were narrow or wide option, they had to have the "convertable' option to have narrow, the dealer in Marrietta Ohio sold a lot of them for some reason, our dealership never sold one..

thanks Tim! ive always kinda wanted a open station 4630-40. i wonder how hard to would be to convert one to the open station condidering controls, linkage, consoles, seat, etc

If you could find an open tractor for parts it would take the complete fender, platform, dash, console, and seat assembly. Remove the cab and install the open assembly. I have never seen a 4630 or 46/4840 open around here (WI) but have worked on open 4430s. I don't know if the 4430 platform would work on 4630 but you could look on Deere website and compare parts needed.

There is one up the road a few miles for sale here, in central Ohio I know of several open station 4630's, they can be changed over, the big thing is aquiring all the parts if you need to buy many new parts it will get pricey, we have an open station 4240 here on the farm, they have their place, we had it on one of the manure speaders last week,,no one was eger to run it, the 4440 with cab was on the other one, the nephew running it wouldn't get out between loads for fear of loosing it :>) back in the 80's we planted with a 4230 open station, it was a sweet tractor, was turned up a bit with a turbo, we used it a lot, I miss that tractor, it had the sweetest sound tugging a load, I wore a lot of seats out on that one....we watched the tach turn over twice and it was well on the way for the third roll over when we sold her...

Yes Cliff I think they will inter-change, just a bit of difference where the seat bolts to the top of the rock shaft. I'm sure that there are more of them in the south..

I have seen 4030 and 4230 narrow fronts.Like Tim says it was listed as option for 4430 but I never seen one.Another interesting option is the two post rollguard and yellow canopy, they look sharp. The first 4430 our local dealer sold was a syncrorange fender tractor with the two post rollguard and canopy.I do not know why it was not ordered as a factory 4 post.I have seen two 4630's set up with twopost rollguards. It is a different rollbar made of solid steel like the 4520's.

IIRC when removing SGB steering wheel(valve) & dash remain with tractor and I think these parts are identical on open station or SGB. JD parts for 40 series does list a different seat support for open station tractors. On the console I think the console is the same but some mounting parts are different according to the parts footnotes. On the dash(instrument panel) all I could find in footnotes was referring to trans. type

Jim,
The dash and steering support stay in the SGB when removing. They are supported by the cab floor. Looking at the parts book the cowl (dash) support is the same with some differences in small pieces between SBG and open. On an open you can remove the fenders and platform while leaving the dash. If you can find the open platform hopefully the rest will be with it. A good parts yard would swap the complete SGB for complete open setup for the price of needed parts just to save labor. The other thing that needs to be changed is the battery boxes.

You wont find a 4840 in a open station they were all cabbed- from the factory anyway. I've seen some 4640 with the 4 post rops but I dont think I've ever seen a complete open station on one. Every now and then you'll see open stations pop up for sale. Does anybody know- are the 4 post rops and complete open stations a different set up (besides the obvious post and canapy) Or are they more of a SGB with out windows and doors??

I think the last tractor to offer the NF was the 4240- and I dont think you could get them on the 46xx series.

Clff, I think your refering to newer model tractors, on the 30 and 40 seres cabs the steer column and dash stay with the tractor, the seat and console lift off with the cab, the dash area is the same ,just a different color, the seat brackets are different from a cab to a fender deck, ths console is the same also.

The 4 post canopy frame is the same as a cab, the battery boxes are the same, the 4 post sets on rubber cab mounts just like the cabs. I have swaped open stations and cabs both ways, not a bad job if you have all the stuf...

Thank you Tim for confirming my statement. I had supervised R&R many SGB's way back when I was a JD dealer service manager and I thought I was correct. I was beginning to think Alzheimer's(old timers) had set in.

I pull a lot of cabs here, so I'm fresh on them. Years ago I made a nifty cab puller that works slick, I can pull a cab by myself in an hour or so (unless the axle housing bolts are rusted fast:)

Tim
I have never done one that way. I am usually going after a double split when removing the cab and want the dash gone anyway. I don't have one close to look at right now but if you have done them like that I learned something today. That would be the way to do it for the project being discussed.

I think pulling the cab and leaving the dash in place, even when I'm fixing a burnt one that's the way I do it, remove the wiring, hoses, cab rear mounts,4 1/2" bolts on each front corner, 4 3/8" bolts under the floor, linkage,, a bolt on each side near the cowl, remove the cowl sides, then I spear my cab dolly into the grooves from the rear, it will lift the cab with parallel linkage strait up as much as 27", leaving the dash and steering in place, I wish I could post a pic of it, darn it,,it's made like a large floor crane with caster wheels in front two 15" wheels of an old grain drill on back, a combine feeder house cyl and an old port a power for the lift, the top of the mast has tongue clips so you can pull it down and tow it behind the service truck..

Is your nifty SGB puller better than the OTC special tool that fit on the 3pt of pulling tractor and slid into the frame channels(tubing)???

I Think the 30 series was the last to have a tricycle front end. There is a 4430 here with a tricycle front end. Ive seen 2 in the area. 4030 and 4230 are more commonly seen as tricycles. I think the convertible front end will have the piece on the steering motor like the 4010/4020 where the 4 bolts hold the piece on from the steering motor to the tie rods. The others are square rather than round and have 1 bolt i believe.

I guess a boy here has installed a tricycle front end on a 6030, havent seen it yet, it could be interesting. Another man has converted maybe 4 30-55 series deeres and 2 mf"s to tricycles. Depends on how much money you want to spend as well as time.

Your right about the trycicle 4 bolt pattern on the convertable front end the other styls has a tapered spline and is not as sturdy, a friend of mine cobbled a narrow front on a 4440 open station (he cut the 4 post) for pulling it worked okay, but was not pretty.
